hey all--so a chef buddy of mine has finally jumped on the "locavore" bandwagon--his resteraunt is promoting local farmers, butchers, spice purveyors, wines, etc.  I think its a great idea to support AZ food growers--they work hard to make quality goods.

So the question is: who are the best local farmers and/or butchers that are raising quality veg/cow/pig/bird that we can support?

We had one who was a sponsor on here for a while, but due to economic times, they did not renew.  Other than that, I'm not sure..

Isn't there a butcher in Buckeye that specializes in local pork and beef?

There's a place called Excel's Country Fresh Meats out here in Buckeye that I just stumbled across.  It's on my list of places to visit next week.  I'll report back once I make a visit.

Excel Country Fresh Meats is a stand alone business playing off Excel Fresh Meats name which is part of Cargill out of Wichita, KS. We'll see how long it takes for Cargill to go after them.

I have been involved/help started the Prescott Farmer's Market.  Unlike many markets, this is a producers only market and we have some great farmer and rancher members.  I encourage people to contact our members for a diversity of products, for a complete list go to www.prescottfarmersmarket.org.

There are five outfits I can highly recommend.

For beef:  Orme Ranch Beef -  Contact Diana Kessler - The Orme Ranch is located just north of Cordes Junction off the I-17, they are great people with a great product that is grass fed and finished with a small amount of grain.  TS Farms of Paulden offers beef too.  Tom Reilly is top notch and offers an all grass fed beef.  Both have a limited supply and have uniquely different products.

For Chicken:  Call Wade at Beefway Ranch in Chino Valley.  They offer an excellent quality free range chicken.  He also offers custom butchering.

For Vegetables:  Contact Kelly at KB Farms which is located on the Orme Ranch adjacent to I-17.  They have some vegetables almost all year long.  Contact Cory and Shanti Rade at Whipstone Farms.  They have a wide variety of products from March through November, depending on the weather and the year.  If you want a variety of top quality fresh chile, Whipstone is great!  Both of these farms provide all natural products (no chemical pesticides and no chemical fertilizers).

If anyone has questions, feel free to call me.  These are all friends and I would be happy to help you get in contact with them.

Thanks for that sharing that info Cornbred.  Great news for sure.

Having hunted Diablo Canyon, Grapevine Canyon and the Two Guns/Twin Arrows for many years, it's good to hear that Metzger's are willing to deal locally.  They have always welcomed us hunters with open arms by allowing access to hunting areas via their land.  They've also been more than happy to point us in the direction of them elks.   ;)

Great people in my opinion.

There is always hope...  We are always looking for more quality sponsors for both the club and the events.  If you stop in or do business with any of these places, please let them know about us and suggest that they help out the Arizona BBQ Community by becoming one of our great Sponsors..  ;)
