Think you have the best ribs in Arizona?? This is your chance to prove it.

What: Heart Attack Grill Rib Challenge
When: Dec, 9th
Where: Heart Attack Grill
           440 W. Warner Rd.
           Tempe, Arizona

We have decided that we are going to move the December rib cookoff to the parking lot of Heart Attack Grill this year.

Everything is still subject to change, but this is what our goals in this contest are going to be. It will be in the parking lot at Heart Attack Grill and we are hoping to get Budweiser to bring out a beer truck. Heart Attack Grill will provide nurses to treat your burns and deliver any medication that you may require. (Within reason) Heart Attack Grill is also going to put on a burger eating contest so those of you who think that you can eat will have a chance to prove it. The rules for the rib contest will pretty much be the same as they were last year. We will be following KCBS guidelines for turn-ins.

Entry fees are $50

Again, nothing is set in stone yet, but we are hoping for the following.

1st place $1000
2nd place $500
3rd place $300
4th place $150
5th place $100
6-10th     $???

After Taylor I think that I have completely lost my mind in wanting to organize another event. With that being said we would appreciate any help that we can get in getting sponsors together and in organizing the event. Contact Darin or myself to find out what you can do to help. This event is going to be alot of fun and we hope to make it a little unique compaired to other events. This event is going to be alot of fun and I hope to see you all there.

Darin, are these details still correct?  Any changes?  Where do we send our registrations?  Who is the check made out to?

Thanks...

I'm 99.9% sure that we'll be skipping this one.

I may have missed it but, for those of you who are planning to compete, I didn't see any information on the event page that gave check-in times or turn-in times so be sure double check that info.

Good luck to all who plan to compete.

Too bad they waited so long to make a decision on the times.  I've already committed my time that day to other activities.

I read the cancellation post over at the AZBBQA board this morning to and I think that it may be a good thing that the event won't be happening right now.

Perhaps the extra time, (March 24, 2007 was posted as a likely new date), will give the people who were attempting to organize the event an opportunity to secure more sponsors and competitors.  In fact, I think they'd be better off to make this a KCBS or IBCA sanctioned rib cook-off instead of going with an "anything goes" approach.  (Just my opinion on that.)  An in town event like is a real opportunity to showcase all the fun that barbeque can be and more time to better organize the event can't really be a bad thing.

The actual reasons for the cancellation were not posted but what was said was they were "beyond control".  I don't really know what that means and I suppose it doesn't really matter.  What does matter is that this could be a really great event and hopefully it will be when it happens.

Rib cook-offs are a lot of fun, and I'm sure the organizers were very bummed that it just could not come together right now.

I would not have been able to make it on the 9th anyway, so in a way, I'm glad that it is pushed back, It will give me some more time to hone my rib cooking skills...  ;)

Hope to see you all there when it is re-scheduled.

Aaron

Hi guys.

Beyond my control means that I had no control over some of the things that happened that prevented this event from taking place. The date really hurt us. We started the project a few weeks before Lake Pleasant which didnt buy us much time, and then with everything going on with the holidays myself nor any of the other organizers have really had time to put into this to really get it going. Not to mention that it seems that there were not many competitors who seemed interested. The owner of Heart Attack Grill also has a million things going on right now (if you have watched the news you would understand) and couldnt really put in the time to help get it going.

VisionQuest, if you would like to be part of the planning meetings you are welcome to voice your opinions about sanctioning. I somewhat agree with you that the rules should be more strict, but there is a history behind the rules being what they are. Basically we are trying to get anyone who thinks they can cook ribs to join in the fun. You dont have to be an expirenced contest BBQ chef to enter. This contest is supposed to be a little more relaxed and fun than the big contests and not taken as seriously.

You are right, I am bummed that it didnt work out and I am sorry that we didnt pull through.

Aaron,  Better to step back and regroup and really make it a great event than trying to push it out and being disappointed.  I hope to work with you on it for the future date.
