Thermapens? Dual probe therms?

First things first.....are Thermapens really necessary/preferred? What more can they do for me that my std instant read pen won't? Fill me in on my ignorance please.....

Also, I've been using an ET73 for a month (after I screwed up a brisket w/ the old cheap one), dual probe remote. Now, the transmitter works great, but the receiver has about a 10 foot range. I've changed batteries, followed all the instructions, and no help. Is this a prob anyone else has encountered? Does anyone else recommend one they have used w/ success?

Thx!!

We have 2 of the ET73's, and we have the same problem.  Not at competitions, but at home when theres interference from other wireless devices.

I've been using an ET-73 for over a year now. Only problem has been I had to replace the food probe, and will probably have to replace the pit probe before long. There's a place on ebay in Utah that has the replacements with 6ft probes and the service from them is great, 2 days.

therma pens are the fastest and most accurate pen i have ever used. they read instantly so less time with the door open and less recovery time.
just my 2 cents

Not everyone needs to have a Thermapen of course, but you asked for some feedback why folks use them vs. other instant read thermometers so here's a few comments:

They are great if you can afford one, but the 5$ quick read thermos that most chefs use IMHO are the way to go-accurate,cheap,easy to find, and only 2-3 seconds longer to read !!
