Trip down memory lane Pizza

I am making this tonight, so I thought I would post this from a previous thread I did on another forum......

I was lucky enough to grow up in NW Iowa in a town called Sioux Rapids. The population at that time was around 700, probably less than that these days. Our School was a K-12 single building school with a total of about 400 students.

We actually had a lunch room worth eating in, the food was nearly always homemade and nutritious, one of the favorite items being Pizza. I remember sitting in grade school, shortly before lunch, smelling the intoxicating aroma wafting up from the lunch room, watching the clock as it inched along. Finally, lunch time!!

A couple years ago, I was up in SR and ran into Peggy Hurless, one of the long-time cooks at the old school. I asked her for the recipe for the pizza, and she was nice enough to give it to me.

It was a simple recipe, and if it tasted as good as I remember then I was to be a happy man.

I made the dough covered it and put it aside to let it rise.

In the meantime, I browned the hamburger, but deviated from the recipe a bit by adding chopped onion. I just can not brown ground beef without onions and black pepper. It just does not seem right.

When it was all browned up, I added the remaining ingredients and set it aside.

The dough had risen so I rolled it out, put it on the baking sheet, and again, deviated from the recipe by baking the crust a bit by itself first.

On went the "Sloppy Joe" mix and the cheddar cheese, then popped it in the oven.

Out came the pizza and the rest is...history!

I had my brother over to be the official taste tester. He gave it two thumbs up, saying that it was as good as he remembers!

I was from Sioux Falls as a kid and had a business in Fort Dodge later in life. I used to drive through Sioux Rapids all the time. Nice town right along the river. I also spent a lot of time up at Okoboji. That was a party lake!

OK so now we know Dean was a deviator in school....he admits it in the recipe (not once but twice!)!  That explains things a bit.........just messin' around here!! ;D ;D

But... I want to know why those poor Indians in the area were either going down raging whitewater (Sioux Rapids) or falling over cliffs (Sioux Falls)??

Great story Dude!!

Lake Okoboji was one of my favorite summertime memories.  We used to go up to Arnolds park and go through the funhouse, have an ice cold root beer, and ride the wooden rollercoaster.  It seemed like the water in West Okoboji was always just the right temp....if we were lucky we got to go over to the Emporium for some salt water taffy.

We moved away from that area when I was just 14, so I missed out on the party part of the "Iowa Great Lakes" region, I have been up there a couple times since, I actually rode the old roller coaster with my kids last time I was up!  Still as rickety as ever.

Wow, that definitely does not look like the pizza I had in school!!  I think that might also be one you have to try on the grill, as it turns out really well.  Of course now that I see it was a sloppy joe pizza, it REALLY reminds me of the Lunch Lady song from Saturday Night Live!!

Great Pictures!!! I grew up outside of Norfolk, Nebraska only a 175 miles from Sioux Rapids. I use to duck hunt in between sioux rapids and Petersburg which is just a few miles to the west. Been through the one horse town many of times.

Mmmm.  I love making my own pizza from scratch.  That and homemade pasta are two of my favorite things to make when I've got the time.  That looks great.

If you headed north out of Sioux Rapids on 71, then you took a left at 10 to go to Peterson, our farm was right there on the NorthWest corner of the 10 and the 71.

Good pheasant hunting up that way too.

I don't remember seeing a house there anymore but if I remember there was an open shed on the property and a big house on the SW corner of 10 and 71 with a big brick porch. Used to see deer on 10 by the little pond down in the gully a mile or two west of your old place. I used to drive from Ft Dodge to Sioux Falls on as many county roads as I could.
