My son and I took at trip to UA North on Sunday to see the Cats lose to the Devils (which i'm pretty sure is the 7th sign  :(). Before the game we went to The Chuck Box (burger joint) right on campus, on a recommendation from some friends who still live in the area. Absolutely delicious. I had a green chile and jack cheese burger, the Tijuana Torpedo, that was perfect. Cooked right in front of you in an old Argentine style grill over glowing hardwood. The burgers have a great char, perfect seasoning and nice quality ingredients. They only do a few things, but they realize that doing a limited amount of food, and doing it right, is the way to success. It's cash only, spartan interior, but well worth it. The fried zucchini was great, light breading fried just right. It's hard to make a great burger, but real easy to screw it up. Nice place.  2 burgers, 1 zucchini, and 2 soft drinks = $19.00

The Chuck Box is indeed a Tempe institution. I used to eat there often when I went to ASU in the early 70's. >:D It was also a great place for live music and cheap beer on a Saturday night. They opened a location near me that is now an Oregano's. I never got around to going there. To me, the one and only Chuckbox is the one you went to. Gotta get back after being inspired by your description. :P

The Chuck Box is my favorite burger place in town.  That's where I got the inspiration to put Green Chili Burgers on our AZBarbeque Catering Trailer's menu.

I absolutely love that place, the food is awesome & the eye candy is typically pretty good as well..

Phoenix has a similar burger joint in The Original Hamburger Works, near Phoenix College.  Way up north, try Bun Huggers convenient to NAU.  Never found anything better than Jack in the Box south of the Gila.

Rarely was the eye candy ever good at Huggers East.  On a rare night we found some decent candy at Huggers West...but it was always wrapped.

Still, good burgers and a great condiment bar.

I went to Phoenix College before ASU and the Original Hamburger Works was another favorite. (The original Mary Coyle's Ice Cream was in the same plaza.) But my all-time fav college daze eats was at McGurkee's, just across the street from OHW. Still open and still my standard by which all other subs are judged. The Super Sicilian is a thing of beauty. :P
