Title: WSM charcoal ring
Post by: AZWildcat on July 28, 2010, 05:14:43 pm
Anyone ever used a charcoal ring other than the Weber brand? Thinking of making one, anyone had success?

I've not made one for a WSM, but seems to me that a strip of expanded metal about 4X48 with the ends bolted together and wired to a replacement charcoal grate for a 18" weber kettle should do you just fine.  I've made about 20 using this same design for UDSs, just varied the dimensions.

I have a crappy Brinkmann box smoker that has the same charcoal basin at the ECB's. The fire couldn't breathe. So I got a perforated, square BBQ wok that fit just right. I elevated it with nuts and bolts that were about 5 " long. It still is a piece of junk, but the fire breathes better and the ashes can fall through the holes.
