Can you use a weber performer for comps? I know it lights by propane but cooks w/ coals. Any help where the legality is? thx!

As long as it's a gas assist used to light the coals and not cook the meat you'll be fine.

My kid wants to start doing child comps, thought it would be a nice grill to do it on. I could also use it for chicken. Thx!

Draggin' it around is the only drawback I see. And people compete with BGEs, after all. That I wouldn't want to drag around, after watching Karyn R. trying to load theirs!

For cooking, lower and slower. For spices, mo' hotter, mo' better. Habaneros rule!

Dan, don't think it would be a problem. If it were me, I sent an email to either KCBS or IBCA. Which ever group is doing the comp. Then you'll have the definitive answer.
