Title: Handles for the charcoal grate in the bottom of my WSM?
Post by: someAZdude on May 03, 2011, 09:34:05 am
I saw on the VWB site that someone welded some. I don't have a welder. I also say someone used eyebolts but Stainless Steel ones in a long enough size are pretty pricey.
Does anyone have other ideas? I'd like to add handles and secure the ring to the two grates. I picked up a second one to keep the coals from slipping through. I just don't know what kinds of metal I can use that is safe for cooking other than stainless? It would be nice to lift the whole basket in one go and shake off the ash.

None here either.  Our Pro Q's (WSM knockoffs) have handles though.

I would be more concerned about upgrading the door material than handles on the charcoal grate. If the bottom is clean each use, the ash falls through, remove the grate, and dump the bottom. Or maybe I'm not understanding your question. During a cook, if I need to stimulate the coals, I do it from the door. ;D

Hey guys, thanks for the replies. What I am talking about is something like what these guys did

I just thought it would make the task of shaking the ash off a lot easier. Having the ring and the two grates as one piece with handles simplifies things but I am not sure what to make the handles out of. I don't want to put anything in there that is going to leak toxins obviously.
