Title: Cold weather smokers step inside
Post by: c5rulz on January 01, 2010, 06:31:28 am
Happy New Year,

Tomorrow I am smoking 2 Boston Butts for pulled pork.  The weather is supposed to be a high of zero.  Anybody had any issues with the WSM in this cold of weather?

Thanks, Ron in the frigid north.

I have used a hot water heater blanket on my WSM in Missouri in the winter. Not quite that cold, but it was still pretty cold. ;D ;D

I have been thinking about getting a great big box and covering the thing.  The water heater blanket isn't a bad idea, but the combustion air temp is still 60-70 less than what it is during the summer plus the heat loss through the metal.  A box would keep the combustion air temp up and air surrounding it warmer.

The box would help with the wind and help heat the surrounding air. If you have assess to some insulation, it could help with the temps inside the WSM.
