We are planning an IBCA BBQ event for this time next year, June 13-14, just before Father's Day, here in Silver City, New Mexico. Silver City is right on the Continental Divide at 6,000 ft. elevation, just 3 hours from Tucson, AZ or 4&1/2 hours from Phoenix. It is an easy drive down I-10, then turn and go north 45 miles from Lordsburg on NM 90. We have a great location, lots of room, a 5,000 sq ft tent. We will have live music, an ATV Tractor Pull, and will be featuring a Green Chile Cook-off as well as the usual BBQ items. We will have a significant purse, hopefully as much as $5,000. We will be looking for vendor entrants as well as regular participants. Would you be interested? Would you come?
This is a cute little mountain town dating from the 1870's. Lots of History around here. With the elevation at 6,000 ft., right now temperatures are in the 80's, and June is very predictable weather. There is a really nice RV park right next door, "Rose Valley RV", with full hook ups and cabins, and 7 motels within a mile. The Comfort Inn, Super 8, Econo Lodge, and Holiday Inn Express are all brand new. We're big enough to have a Super Wal Mart, but not big enough to have any of the big restaurant chains like Chilis or Outback,,,not even an Applebee's. May is full of major events, the Tour of the Gila Bicycle race, the Blues Festival on Memorial Day and our Wild West Rodeo. But June is wide open, and Father's Day could be just the right time to take Dad out for some BBQ and maybe win a BBQ of his own. We will be raffling off a nice BBQ to the public.
Please respond.. Without cookers, we have no event. We are right between Texas and Az, and hope to draw cookers from both directions....

Hey, we would certainly be there, that's not a bad trip for us at all. I'm sure you would also get quite a bit of support from the members on our site here as well.
Let me know if you need some help with it, we have a group in place that is planning the newly formed Arizona Triple Crown of BBQ Circuit here in AZ and we have lots of great info we could share with you that might help you out.
Sounds like a great event, let's make it happen...
-
Wait a minute though, who would your IBCA Judge be?? Not that Thom Emery guy, is it?? I heard he likes his ribs boiled... :o ;D

The judge would either be Jennifer from Midland-Odessa or Laura from Dallas....

You know I was just joking about that judge thing. I would still come if Thom was the judge... ;D ;D

Hey Fourlix, are you planning on coming out for our November event? A dual sanctioned event with over $20K in prizes, trophies and $$$. If you do, bring flyers and/or posters for your event and we will help you hang them around the venue to garner more interest as well. ;)
-
Yes, we will attend your events, especially the one in November. Latest developments......We now have a name.....and a website........

Cook Hell all I do is talk on the phone

That must be the reason you don't get much sleep at competitions.
Try turning your cell phone off next time.
-
Well I could turn it off more but then some excited to be there new cook with his 1000s of questions would be left in the dark.
-
Vince, the reason he doesn't get much sleep at competitions is because that one BBQ Bullies cook keeps him awake all night, you remember that... ;D ;D

Four asks a question here Boys what say you?
Thom, are you suggesting that we should be keeping the discussion in this thread on topic? That's pretty hopeful thinking around here.
-
Probably right
-
Don't know of anything else that weekend. We're in. Sounds great.

Thanks Guys, This thing is taking off. The Billy the Kid thing has not been used much around here, and is ours for the taking. We are going to name our shopping center the "Billy the Kid Plaza" and tie the whole thing together. I have an ATV Motorcycle shop "ATV Mountain Cycle" http://www.atvmountaincycle.com (http://www.atvmountaincycle.com) Polaris/Suzuki/Cam-Am. It is the biggest shopping center in town and it doesn't have a name! The Chamber of Commerce has a cool old log cabin where he lived and a statue, and that is it. Not a single business in town has capitalized on our most famous historical bad boy. Billy Casper is also from Silver City, he comes back every year and helps out with hospital projects, nice Billy. Anyway, the Billy the Kid Championship BBQ and Green Chile Cook-Off is off to a great start.
We are going to go with Thom's suggestion that we do a central cash/ticket system, and combine it with our backyard BBQ giveaway and the People's choice prizes. Chicken Wings have been dropped in favor of enchiladas to go with the Green Chile stew on Friday. We are doing this to bring in local cooks and give the event some local flavor. And Frying wings with limited electricity could be a technical problem. Baking enchiladas still represents some difficulty, but they are a huge local favorite. These will be judged seperately, and not included as part of the Grand Prize or Reserve. We will stick with the basics for that. All of which will be on Saturday.
Lots of details, lots of promotion to go. We will attend several other events in the next year, and pick up whatever good ideas and practices we see along the way. We have our Beer and Margarita Garden all figured out, with 6,000 ft of shade, and misters, all run by the guys that do the garden for the Blues Festival.
That is a huge weight off our shoulders, New Mexico's liquor laws are screwy at best.

Wow, sounds great, sounds like it is really coming together. Should be a great event. Glad to hear the excitment and the commitment to organizing and running the contest. I know it's a lot of work, but it will all be worth it once the event gets under way.
Great job!!

In the interest of making sure you guys want to come up, we are lowering the entry fee to $100 for Saturday's BBQ categories, and increasing the total purse to $6,000.
Friday will be set up, meat inspection and judging for enchiladas and green chile stew, and are not part of the GC or RC. Friday will have a separate entry fee of $60 for both categories or $40 for one category. Or do both days, all five categories, a chance to win $3,250, for just $125.
And we are making this a little easier with just three meats, chicken, pork spare ribs, and brisket. Each category will have a $500 first prize and its own sponsor, including the Grand Champion. Second prize and Reserve Champion in all categories will be $250.
Cookers who are entered in just Saturday's meat categories may be eligible to judge Friday's enchilada and green chile categories. Single one item entry on Saturday $50
There will be an 80/20 split for vendors. Double ticket. First New Mexico Bank will run the ticket booth and be a major sponsor.
Here's a possible prize schedule...$500, $250, $100, $75, $50, $25
Pay through sixth place in five categories, Plus $500 GC, $250 RC, and $250 people's choice. That's exactly $6,000.
Reactions, comments, suggestions, or criticisms welcome.....Coming?
