Tom & I met today with some people who put on Mesa's Old West Days.

They have asked us to come in and do a BBQ Cook-off.  Problem is, they don't have any money to pay for the event.

SO... Tom and I have decided to possibly sponsor the event ourself to the tune of $1000 to $1500 prize money plus trophies.

Entry fee would only be about $100 if that much and it would only be sanctioned by AZBarbeque, NOT KCBS or IBCA.  It would NOT be a State Championship.

What we are thinking here is that since this would be the week before the big Pulte event, Tom and I would run this just like that one, only we would get some of you new teams in here and we would help you out to see how the following weeks event would go.  This would be a great opportunity for you to learn how an event should go without any pressure. WE would be there to help you the entire way, from when to put your meats on, to how to box them.

Question is, how many of you would be interested?  This would be a Friday night - Saturday evening event, just like the Pulte one and would include the 4 meats.

If we can get 8 - 10 teams interested, we will move forward.  We know it's the week before the Pulte event, so we want to make sure we have the interest before we commit.

This is not just open to new teams, if some of the experienced teams also want to come out and compete and just practice for the next week's event, this would be a great time to do so.

Sound off and let us know.

Then we would be there the 6th and 7th, we told them we would NOT be there past 6 pm on Saturday.

They are OK with this as Saturday is their big day.

Sounds like a very good idea.  Any thought of modeling it after an IBCA or KCBS?  Or were you just thinking of all 4 meats, all open to whatever?

We are going to model it after a KCBS as that is what will be the following weekend.

We will help with everything from setup to food prep to smoker control to putting together the boxes.

Not that we are anywhere close to experts, but this will at least show you the basics on how a contest runs in a very stressfree contest.

Maybe I can switch weeks with someone at work. Anyone not with a team that might be interested in getting some experience if I can get that weekend freed up?

I would be intersted in working with a new team. If we get some of us that have cooked that would cook with new teams that would be cool. So if there is a team that wants to enter I will cook with them, I will even bring my equipment and my own beer......
