Title: TUCSON TACO FESTIVAL!
Post by: AZ BBQ FESTIVAL on March 12, 2012, 12:07:32 pm
Hey BBQ Teams,

On April 28th, there's a new kind of competition in town ... well, Tucson. The Tucson Taco Festival!

Here's the gist:
$300 entry fee
Four taco categories - chicken, pork, beef, and fish.
$7,500 prize fund
Judging by the one-and-only National Taco Association

Like BBQ, you submit 6 tacos in competition boxes to judges. In our first year, Mike Reimann's mother took down a huge amount of awards - BBQ teams do well here because you guys know that protein is king (and you can generally drink more tequila than anyone else).

THIS WEEK ONLY! $50 off the entry fee to any entry that refers "AZBARBEQUE" upon entering.

Forms here: http://www.tucsontacofestival.com/entry-forms/

People's Choice is required! See website for details.

Salud!

We had a blast cooking at the one in Scottsdale last year... The majorty of the teams were restaurants but we held our ground with an 8th place overall finish! This will be a great event and will probably sell tons of PC. We sold over 1,000 tacos last year and could have sold more if we didn't have to close down to go to awards.

Answer:
Teams are required to prepare food for festival attendees to sample. We are expecting a minimum of 5,000 guests and 25 teams. Your samples should include at least 2 ounces of protein per taco or enough salsa/guacamole for a small sample cup. Samples will be given out in exchange for sample tickets. You will receive one ticket per food sample. At the end of the festival, count your tickets and submit them in the provided Ziploc bag and you will be reimbursed ($1.00) one dollar for each ticket.
Although you are entering a competition, this is also a public festival. The goal is for the crowd to try your amazing food and enjoy your brand.
* The amount of food you bring is up to you. But please keep the above information in mind.Consider this equation: 8 samples per pound of meat at 2 ounces each = 1,000 samples = 125 pounds of meat.

We were at the last Taco Festival right next door to Smitty. When I got the chance to unlock the chain that hooked me to the freezers in my little corner Smitty and everyone else looked slammed with customers. Lines were the rule of the day! :)
When I finally got the chance to step out of the trailer at the end of the event Smitty was pretty much wiped out but I did get to scrounge up a bit of what was left and it was GREAT! No surprise they sold so much.

Realizing that some folks simply can't do huge amounts of PC for the taco fest, all you have to do is tell us what you ARE equipped to do. It's very easy to figure out how many tacos we need as an event, so then teams like Rubio's and resort restaurants help ease the burden on the little guys than can only do, say, 300 tacos.

Trust me it's a great time! If you can't compete at least go take the judging class if it's offered this year. I judged the first ever Taco Festival and man-o-man it was fun! Lobster taco, shrimp wrapped in a crepe taco "shell" and one of my taco's even had a sunny side up quail egg on it. ???  It seems bbq skills and meat lends itself very well to taco's as evidenced by Smittys team and YUM is the best description of what's in the tent.
If you're into Tequila you won't find any bigger selection outside of Mexico in my opinion.
In the interest of full disclosure, I'm not a paid "shill" for these events I just really believe that these Taco Festivals are one of the most fun things we've been at and could become the next rage.
I can't wait to see a TLC TV show called "tortilla masters"!!!!

And, teams are fully encouraged to bribe their judges with tequila or 20-dollar bills! Kidding- but inside those competition boxes, anything goes.

Hey man,
Rules are technically on the National Taco Association website, which is down till Cinco for re-launch. But I have a copy - PM us for a document.
Competition boxes: A bunch of teams have put their on facebook pages but nothing official. Here's some of the judges tent: http://aztacofestival.com/photo-gallery/?album=2&gallery=19
And here: http://www.tucsontacofestival.com/photo-gallery/?file=Judges%20Tent/

But no good shots of boxes - I can tell you that they were crazy! Decorated all over the inside.

Let us know where to send the rules...

I'll take the rules please.

Jaugat@Comcast.net

They posted on their Facebook page today a picture of a turn in.... Needless to say, not as strict as KCBS!

That's the diff between tacos and BBQ.

BBQ protects tradition.

Tacos says screw tradition, anything goes. Show us what you got!

Email ya in a sec.
