Have not heard anything and as of yet, no one has contacted us.  I know Pat Young, one of our Northern Ambassadors was going to look into it.  I'm sure he will post up some info when he logs in later tonight..

Unfortunately, it would be the same weekend as Mesquite if the did, so who knows..

I was thinking of Taylor last week, and in fact almost posted the same question, and then realized Mesquite was the same (potential) week and dropped it.

Taylor got real hot a couple years. I don't think that you can count on storms like the one at Mesquite every year.

"We're gonna die!!!".....classic. ::)

HEY FOLKS, sorry for the delayed response but i did not want to keep telling ya'll that CAROL hadn't called me back!(she hasn't and iv'e left messages for 3 weeks now!) Anyways i just got off the phone with her and she informed me that she was supposed to speak at the town counsel meeting tonight at 7pm! But they resheduled her for next week! She also mentioned that the town is cutting down on expenses wherever they can and we might be in for a bit of a struggle to say the least! She wants me to call her back next wed. eve. to see what she finds out! One thing that i'm concerned about though --- one of the ems people told me last week that the town of TAYLOR actually took out of their ambulances the phone that they use to patch to our hospital and the crews are to use their personal cell phones, which is bad!! I will keep everybody updated. thanks, PAT

Hey Pat,

Are they planning on the same weekend as past events?   Labor Day?   We would definitely be in for this one as we are not doing Mesquite this year.

Folks, this has been a very fun event in the past, and it gets you out of the heat of the summer for a little while.  I am sure we would have a good turnout for this!

P.S.

Fourth of July would not be a good time, since we already have the Williams event happening.

CAROL didn't call me back, but i had 3 really good conversations this morning with someone at town hall (this person asked for me to keep it off the record) but was very, very helpful in not only giving me background information on past town events( negative and positive) but also a perspective of things that i hadn't really considered ( since i'm new at this!) I think other than working things out with CAROL i/we need to be creative and be able to arrange it where the town can break even or hopefully better on the money issue! This is were i need MIKE and the other members feedback! The rodeo makes money for the town by charging admission and concessions. The 4th of july celebration and the CORN AND QUE although they bring in alot of people to both towns and local businesses, don't really generate money for the actual towns that put out funds for water, electric, parks and rec. police, etc. Anyway, what about if for peoples choice instead of 50% going towards a local charity ( which i would always support!) what if that portion went to the town? Just a thought. Also what about the town charging a small fee at the gate to get in? Any ideas from everyone would be appeciated! Also the town meeting on the 14th they are supposed to be discussing these events so i would like to attend and be able to relay the clubs plans, ideas, etc. and i would also like to educate if you will the fast growing sport of comp. bbq!! especially here in AZ ! Thanks, PAT

Pat it seems a lot of comps are now charging for people to get in, it seems to me that with all the folks coming to the corn festival and hopefully the corn and Q festival they wouldn't have to much problem paying a little to get in, it is also a good time to maybe get some of the other clubs out there to promote there clubs what ever they may be and do a little fund raising. Just my 2 cents bud good luck.

As for People's Choice, it has never been done at Taylor.  We did Taylor for 2 years before it stopped but VENDED at both, sandwiches, drinks and such not samples, and there were only a few BBQ vendors.  I would be up for doing the samples because I think the people would like that better.  I hope that this event can happen!

'Councilor Jay Whipple asked how much the town gets back from the Fourth of July Night Rodeo, Trapper Days and the Sweet Corn Festival. Lundberg said last year the $44,000 spent brought in an additional $28,000. The Sweet Corn Festival still loses money.
Vice Mayor Jordy Fuentes suggest they create a special fund for all celebrations in the hope they will pay for themselves.
"Basically everything taken by the three events will all be shared with that pool of money," Jared Hatch said. "Hopefully in the end, they will all pay for themselves." '

State budget numbers leave Taylor at a loss, WMICentral (3/26/2010)

I don't see how they are losing money with the festival. It's always been crowded and full of vendors.

Are they not getting sales taxes from local restaurants and hotels? Or are they letting those visitors take money back to Heber and Show Low? What is the chamber doing to keep visitors there?

They can try to charge admission, but I think attendance will go down. I know BBQ comps are fun for the competitor, but as a spectator event there's really not much to see. It's not like watching the Firefighter events or as flashy as the car show. The Peoples Choice would help alot and so might some BBQ demonstration classes.

They really need to look for sponsorship for the event if they don't want the responsibility.
Title: Re: Taylor Corn and Que

The driving reason for the Taylor event was three fold.  1) the President of the now defunct AZBBQA had family ties there 2) The city didn't charge us to use the space or for permists and 3) the city mostly let us do what we wanted.   This made placement of the event somewhat easier.   However as Pat is finding out it isn't a walk in the park.  From April to the event the AZBBQA president was in Taylor pounding the pavement at least every other weekend.

The event also had a very low entry fee, $195, that included water and electric.  Keeping the entry fee low was a priority so city/family connections were used to get electric service, grey water etc.  Sometimes those things didn't come together until the weekend before the event.  In most cases it was discounted or donated.    The BBQ portion of the event operated as a loss every year and we used a portion of AZBBQA club fees to offset the expense.  We did not get that from the city.

EuroFresh Farms was the primary sponsor, not the city.
We didn't have samples after the first year because the city asked us not too.   The city had a deal with their local vendors that precluded them from competing with the teams for customers.
