I don't see last year's Grand Champion, Twin Oaks Smokin' Crew, on the list and last year's RGC, Pig In, Pig Out, isn't on the list either.  The application said that the team limit is 65 so there's only room for 3 more teams.

Any word on them not allowing meat from outside Rio Rancho?  That is just a ridiculous rule.  How are they going to have enough meat for 67 teams?  I can see some teams backing out because of this...

I got a call today from the NM Dept. of Health and they also tried to tell me that I was "required by both the contest and the health dept. to buy my meat locally because they couldn't be sure that I had kept it at safe handling temperatures if I bought it in Phoenix". 

First of all, I've seen it written nowhere in the literature that the contest required that the meat be purchased locally, only that it needed to be purchased from a USDA approved location and that it be kept at safe food handling temperatures at all times.  If anyone has any information to the contrary, in writing, I'd love to see it.

Jay could tell you some stories about his conversation with the health dept. people last year.

As per Art 3/19/2009 12:15PM --- Quote -- Meat can be purchased where: any meat outlet at any location. It must be wrapped and keep properly cooled and as per KCBS Rules not seasoned.

just got off the phone and asked Art to get the guy's name title and a statement to the opposite of the rumor's floating around.
Scottie this is my 6th year at RR every year some rumor comes up and pisses all the cooks off -- yes weve had a run in with the propane natzi, did we cook -- yes. after they left we put the propane burner in the truck and they never asked about it again
