Title: Pulte/Del Webb Hot Air Balloon Festival & BBQ Throw Down
Post by: Mike (AZBarbeque) on December 20, 2007, 04:50:12 pm
Hey all, the first contest of the new year is finally set.  We finalized all the details today.

Pulte Homes & Del Webb are hosting a Hot Air Balloon Festival & BBQ Throw Down out at their new Sun City Festival Community.

Dates:

Friday, January 25th, 2008 - Saturday, January 26th, 2008.

Located at:

Sun City Festival
26415 W. Desert Vista Blvd.
Buckeye, AZ 85396

It says Buckeye, but it is 15 miles West of Surprise off of Bell Rd.  Great community.

This will be a 4 category competition, Chicken, Ribs, Pork, Brisket.

AZBarbeque will be sanctioning and juding the event.  I will post more on the rules in a bit.

Pulte homes has also asked if we would do a People's Choice so the public can get a chance to taste all the great food.  They are expecting 2000 - 3000 people out at the event, so this will be a great way to make back some of your expenses.  It will be the normal 50/50 split.  Cost will be $2 per ticket for the public and that will get them a small sample of your food.  This is not a plate of food, so make sure to keep it consistant.  When you go to the awards presentation, you will turn in your tickets for counting.  When the awards presentation is over, you will pick up your money.  For each ticket you receive, you will get $1 back, so make sure you have fun with this event as it will be a money maker.

The cost of the event is just $150 if you register prior to January 15th, 2008.  After that, it goes up to $200.  Electric will be provided as well.

Prize money is guaranteed and will be paid by Pulte Homes at the awards presentation in CASH, so no worrying about checks clearing.

This should be a really fun event and we look forward to seeing you all out there.  We are hoping for 10 - 15 teams, so get your registration filled out and sent it today.

This will be an official "Triple Crown" Event, so points will be awarded for how you finish and will be used to determine the Arizona Team of the Year awards.

Gotta do some checking on the date due to the proximity to Super Bowl weekend and what that might mean for work but we would love to do this event.

When do you plan to have the prize money breakdown posted?

How will the boxs be scored?

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and guess that they'll use numbers between 2 and 9 and then apply a simple yet highly complex formula that could result in one team being a mere two ten thousandths of a point ahead of another.

This is our first competition, but I can't wait to learn the tricks of the trade.  We get pretty good reviews here in Florence, Coolidge and Casa Grande.  So we can't wait to see what the real experts think.  Sounds like a good time for one and all.

I have not received any yet, but I'm sure due to the Holidays that the mail is running behind.  I will check again later today.

I know I have personally sent out 10 of them and talked with many of you, so I am anticipating between 10 - 15 teams out at the event.

Awesome news all.

The Ribs will be KCBS style...

Turn in Times will be:

11:00 - Chicken
12:00 - Ribs
1:00 Pork
2:00 Brisket

People's Choice will go the entire day, from 10 am - 3 pm.  This way it gives the public more time to enjoy the food and you more time to make some $$$.

Awards will be at 3:30 pm.

Hey Mike, I noticed that on the entry form you listed your address as #157. A previous address you gave me listed it as #1057 . I think this could be the problem of not receiving the entries yet.

Jay & Tim, thanks for bringing that to my attention.

Here is the corrected one.

Mailing address should be:

Don't know if we will get the envelopes back or not from the Post Office. It depends on the person who lives at #157. Mike, would you try to talk to the person in #157?.....or what?
Title: Re: Pulte/Del Webb Hot Air Balloon Festival & BBQ Throw Down

There is no #157 here.

The one I received yesterday did say 157 on it and I will talk with my mail delivery person today.  They know me well, so I'm sure if it gets to them, it will get to me.

Sorry for the confusion...

I will be judging this year and want to let it be known that I can not be swayed in my voting no matter how much money or pretty girls are thrown my way. (But it doesn't hurt to try!)  ;D

Seriously, it sounds like it's going to be a good time, Relly lookng forward to it.  Hope to see Tomfu out there displaying his mad skills with Tofu BBQ (Lite)!

Yes, Scoring will be similar to KCBS style.  I am working on a scoring formula specific to our events.

Mike,

I know you posted earlier in the thread that there will be room for Jay's 5th wheel.   Are we getting a 20x40 or something like that or is there so much room that we shouldn't have any issues?

Just trying to figure out if I'll have room for all my normal stuff and a pop-up with slide out.  don't want to freeze anything off that night.

Right now, space is not a factor.  If we get above 15 teams, then we will have to make sure everyone stays in their 40X20 spaces, but right now, we have some room to spare.  Should not be any problem getting RV's and pop ups in.

Damn.  Don't know what to bring now since Tim's going to be rolling the fatties.

I'll bring some extra papers and some clips.  Don't want to burn our fingers the night before a cook.

I usually do chili for the guys on Friday night.  If there's no objections I could probably make enough for everyone.

Anyone got any issues with Elk Chili?

If we get more than 15 teams, then I need to start looking at space requirements, so it is a soft cap.

The deadline to enter for the $150 is today, and right now, we are at 10 teams.  I doubt I will get another 5 today, so we should be OK.

IF I don't have your name listed above, please let me know that your entry is on the way.  Thanks...

Buckeye, AZ 85396

It says Buckeye, but it is 15 miles West of Surprise off of Bell Rd.

I have asked them for a more detailed description of where we will be setting up, once I get this, I will post it.  ;)

Yeah Jay, I was thinking the same things.  I'm guessing they were trying to imply that the admission to the barbeque contest is free but it sure does look like they're advertising that people will recieve free barbeque.

Well since we're all trying to figure out the important stuff I do have a question that I feel is a tad bit important to the success of any competition.

Are there any booze laws at this thing we should be aware of????

And if not, is everyone prepared to bring a bottle of their favorite to the pot luck?

I got my bottle of Gentleman Jack to go with the Chili!!!!!!!!

Tim,  We are letting each team decide for themselves when to do the people's choice. At the last event, some competitors started early and most of the public was glad they did.  If you have the ability to start early, then great.  If not, then just do it from 2 - 3 pm.

I may not be consistent with any of my turn-ins but by God there will always be Gentleman Jack, Patron Silver and Jager somewhere in the vacinity of my banner.

Based on the weather I might have my big ole patio heater near by as well.   I don't mind a shiver from a good shot but I hate to be cold.

Thanks for setting the records straight on the turn in times, Mike.  Now I just have to figure out how to make competition style port between now and then.

I went out to the site late last week after dropping a client off at 175th Ave & Greenway.  It is a very easy drive, all paved road and the turn off (Canyon Springs Blvd.) is very well marked. (There's a large Shell gas station and convenience store on the NE corner.  BTW, Bell Road becomes Sun Valley Pkwy. shortly after you get west of Surprise.

Yes, all competitors will be responsible for providing their own People's Choice containers.

There might be a health inspection, you never know when they will show up, so make sure you have everything you need to be legal.

Yes, we are on pavement, part of the parking lot.

Hope this helps.

Hi Michael! Bob Benson here. Just wondering if you can provide any additional info on the event. Do they have a web page? I was asked if there will be a "glow" in connection with the balloon festival.  Thanks.  Bob
Title: Re: Pulte/Del Webb Hot Air Balloon Festival & BBQ Throw Down
Post by: Mike (AZBarbeque) on January 21, 2008, 09:02:06 pm
Great questions all.

Yes, there will be water and grey water disposal out at the site and yes, there should be room for you to set up a tent.

Electric will be provided.

Bob, here is the web site with the info from Dell Webb  http://www.delwebb.com/Homefinder/Overview.aspx?Page=Events&ID=100512

I do not see if there will be a "Glow" going on, but a lot of it depends upon the weather and the wind.  Hopefully.

I will need any volunteers and/or judges to arrive no later than 10 am on Saturday.

Thanks...

Arrivals was moved back to Noon so we have time to set up.  We don't get the site until about 10 am, so it will take about 2 hours to get it set up.  If you get there before then, we could always use your help...  ;)

Whiskey Ranch was hired by Pulte to give out BBQ to the masses.  They turned around and had Pulte agree to fund a prize fund for a BBQ Cook-off, so they really helped us get this event off the ground.  Whiskey Ranch will be giving out Pulled Pork & Pulled Chicken Sandwiches for Free.  However, it never fails that people want to taste what the competitors are offering.

Whiskey Ranch will not be giving out Brisket, Ribs or full Chicken (Thighs, etc.) so that is what I would concentrate on for People's Choice.  Brisket goes a long way as does Chicken Thighs.  I know Ribs are expensive, so you probably won't be doing too many of those, but that is what the story is on the People's Choice.

Hope this helps....

Awfully quite out here on the forum for the night before an event.

Where's the chatter?   Rain buckets here in south Tempe right as I was pushing the spicewine around the house to the garage.  Totally sucked but since I'm 9 beers into my loadout I got over it real quick.  Actually amazed I can type.

Didn't realize how bad my contest withdrawals were.  First time in a long time that doing inventory on our shite didn't bore me to tears.

Did realize I have to hit BevMo on the way out tomorrow cause I've somehow misplaced about 1/2 my Gentleman since November.  Go figure.
