Great question.  Every so often, we offer a class here in AZ called a CBJ Class (Certified BBQ Judge) Class.  Typically it's held the night before a competition.

We just held one this past November.  Havasu is holding one in February and still have a few spots open.  Or you can look at the KCBS web site and see when and where the next ones are and take a mini vacation and attend one of those.  www.KCBS.us

Once you take the class and become certified, then you just find an event that you would like to judge at, contact the promoter and submit your name for consideration.

It is a great job to have a these cook-offs.

I look forward to seeing you out at the events judging.

Good Luck!!

I would also HIGHLY recommend taking the Judging Class if you are a competitor.  It really gives you an appreciation for how the whole judging process works and what the judges like/dislike in an entry.  It is time and money well spent by those who are thinking of competing, or those who compete but have not yet taken the judging class.

Don't want to compete. Not that kind of person. Ppl like MY bbq but it is not competition bbq. Would like to judge cuz I like BBQ. Can't see why it would do me any harm in trying other ppl's bbq.

It's a wonderful way to be involved in the comps if you can't dump the $600 or so on the entry fee, meats, travel, canopy, supplies, Ice, water, bus pans....Ya don't get to go hang out with one team, but hey...you get to eat some REALLY good ribs!!

For cooking, lower and slower. For spices, mo' hotter, mo' better. Habaneros rule!
