Ok yall asked for it so here goes.
Santa Rita High School here in Tucson is one of our lower income schools. So after seeing what a great event Force had with all the help from everyone, and pitching to the booster club which they are so excited. We are looking to have a 4 meat comp, with turn-ins on Saturday March 13th 2010. We are also going to have a backyard comp at the same time there will be a car show going on with booths manned by the differant clubs there will also be school bands playing. As for as the comp goes this will not be a sactioned event as we are tring to get as much money to go to the kids as possible. We are looking to do a 50/50 food sample to the public and if you would like to vend let me know and we will get the details worked out. So Im putting the challenge out to all of our club members lets all step up and help the kids and have a great time doing it. There are still many details to work out and I will get them to you as soon as I can.
Ok so now by a show of hands how many of you new and seasoned teams are interested.

Mark, let's talk, we can still have it sanctioned by AZBarbeque and make it part of next year's Triple Crown. Possibly even make it a State Championship.
-
BBQ Bullies are in !!!! Yeah baby :)
-
Hey Mark, you know Crash and our team is there!!! Let us know if you need a help out also. Crash is retired remember!!!
-
Sounds good Mark. Looking forward to it.
-
Sounds like a great time...... we maybe in......... make sure you check out all avenues for clearance..... just because it's on school property doesn't exclude city and state ordinances...... wouldn't want the health or fire dept to shut down.....trust me on this...... you can certainly raise some good monies...... you have plenty of time to plan...........great stuff.......
-
Thank you Force we will do that for sure. One of the good things is I work with the Fire marshal's office all the time and know them well.
-
Makes life easier....... don't forget the health dept......
-
Major Woodys will be found excitingly participating in this event!
-
Excitingly??

Dean,
Next time I see you, remind me of this. I have a great story about "the guy who walks into the urgent care with that problem".....and dont even get started because it was NOT me. ;D
-
so were u embarrassed? lol

so were u embarrassed? lol
Nope.....it was funny as hell though. Lets just say that Flagstaff Medical Center ER has paper thin walls.
-
Mark,
I would like to either compete or judge this event. If competing, I would like to find someone who would like to team up. I'm pretty good on ribs and pork, weak on chicken and brisket.

Oh come on!! You can't leave that hanging!!! (get it)
-
I've got you all beat. I've had to x-ray them. Soft tissue technique.
-
I don't even know what to say to that..... :-X
-
So...back on topic. Mark, are you looking at doing the 4 standard contest meats?
-
which subject? lol
-
We are in committee right now to try to figure that out. the biggest thing is we need to find out if there is enough intrest to even try a comp Here in Tucson so the more teams that say they have an intrest the better selling we can do. The biggest thing is to remember its for the Kids. If we do a Comp it will be the four meats for comp teams and we will be doing a backyard at the same time. So come guys lets all get on board and do this right and get involved.
-
You say that it won't be sanctioned as you want as much money as possible to go to the kids but you may be overlooking the fact that teams from out of town as well as out of state won't travel to this event simply because it isn't sanctioned by a national organization. Perhaps you should contact Gene Goycochea or Merl & Carol Whitebook, all members of the KCBS Board of Directors and very good friends of barbeque in Arizona, to see what options are available.
The last events held in Arizona, in Buckeye and Tempe, (sanctioned by KCBS and IBCA respectively), both drew in excess of 30 teams and those teams came from Arizona, California, Texas, New Mexico, and Illinois. It's awfully hard to argue with that kind of response.
I can tell you that it is becoming increasingly difficult for us and many other teams that we know to participate in competitions that are unsanctioned because they are trying to be done "on the cheap".
-
If it matches up with my girls spring break, I'd be there... Wish I knew when that was going to be for next year....
But I do know what you are saying Vince and I agree. but then again, Ihave cooked unsanctioned one's that we did and all the entry went to a foundation and the cooks just cooked for fun or the chance to win a prize that was donated. Which some of the prizes were in excess of $500+... But we all knew coming in to it that it wouldn't be cash payouts. Well, OK, it was for my foundation... but I didn't organize it, just so I could cook it... ;D

Charity events are great and we've done them in the past. Heck, we did one just about a month ago in Costa Mesa, CA. What bothers me is when an unsanctioned event, designed to raise money for a charity, becomes something much more than just for the charity. Like when someone puts a proclamation on it and makes it a Jack draw event. Now those of us who pay attention to those events are being blackmailed into entering a contest that doesn't have impartial oversight, a standardized set of rules and all that comes with sanctioning. Good intentions are just that, good intentions. National sanctioning creates credibility and accountability which simply doesn't exist at anywhere near the same level in unsanctioned events.
If you want to raise money for a charity, do that. Make it about that. Don't turn it into something that it isn't about.
-
I an willing to bet most teams will pay
a $75 higher entry fee to get KCBS and
$35 for a IBCA sanctioning
At only 25 teams times $75 thats $1875
You got er covered
-
What Vince and Thom said.
-
I agree with Vince,Thom, and Jay.Mark ,get it sanctioned, even if only by IBCA,it will go a long way towards getting more teams and making alot more money for the charity. :)
-
My delema guys is im down here. Im a want to be BBQer and have absolutly no experance with this so we have been tring to do something that is managable for a bunch of rookies. Now if I can get Mike and Tommy to come down here and put it all together that would be a differant story. Dont give up on us just yet there is hope of getting it sactioned. that is why we are starting on this so early. Keep it coming.
-
Let me know Mark, I'm more than willing to help... ;)
-
A Space bigger than 15 x 20. ;D
-
I am surprised the sanctioning organizations don't work with event holders for charity causes for some kind of break....interesting,,,,,,,,,,,,,
-
Force almost every event is for charity
If you look at the costs you will see
No one is making money on sanctioning a BBQ event
Gas, a room plus $100 isn't making money
Even the lowest of hookers get that.............................

To be honest, it sounds like a fun event one way or the other. I will still do it even if you don't get it sactioned.

Damn Thom, your hookers make you pay for the gas too? Couldn't you just get them an annual Palm Springs - Indio bus pass? Be a bit cheaper.
-
I knew Dean would have the final breakdown....... why is there such a difference in price Thom between Kansas and Texas then for sanctioning.......
-
Two different sanctioning bodies
KCBS gets more than IBCA
If you have good prize money (cash)
And you go KCBS you can ask more from the cooks
As we have seen the results of the two are similar
Great Que is Great Que
Many cooks prefer the read out and the full field info
that KCBS gives them

Mark, don't be discouraged because funds are hard to come by. There's a lot of time in advance of this event and it may be necessary to get some of the sponsors to take a look at another event, like the one in Buckeye in November, before they're willing to pull the trigger on sponsorship.
Just keep in mind that a sanctioned contest will allow you to draw more teams from greater geographic region than an unsanctioned contest will allow.
-
I will be here to help. Mike, we are going to get in touch with you to pick your brain. Why re-invent the wheel when someone else knows the tricks. I know we have a lot of work ahead of us, but we have a lots of booster parents willing to do anything we ask. Pray for us, because Mark and I don't work well together. We may be divorced before this is done. I love him but I can't work with him. You should see us during comps.
-
;D ;D I have seen you during comps... You guys will be fine. Just remember that at the end of the day, it's all about the kids and the charity.
Putting on these events can be very frustrating, that's why having a great group working together is vitally important.
I'm here for the picking, so use me as you need me...
I can't wait to wear my ASU gear during this event.. ;D >:D >:D
-
Wear it at your oen risk, you will be in Wildcat territory.
-

X2, as long as business travels don't get in the way.
-
nothing but maroon and gold on that trip
-
All right, I read the 120 day warning, and I'm still gonna bump this. :P
So Mark, obviously this thing didn't get going. I'd like to chat with you (Maybe in Hava) about what specific problems you ran in to with pursuing a Tucson 4 meat contest. Maybe someday my dream of a competition closer than 100 miles will be a reality. :D
October 2010 anyone?
-
Yea talk to me at havasu Ill tell ya what happened
-
Then talk to me and I'll tell you what really happened.. >:D
We will get down there soon, we are working on several fronts. I have a big potential sponsor for down there that we will be working with over the next few weeks in hopes that we can still get a comp down there before the end of the year..
-
Then talk to me because I have no idea
-
MARK, anything i can do to help, just ask!!
