Title: AZBBQA Saddle Sore Ranch Four Meat Cookoff And Campout
Post by: VisionQuest220 on March 04, 2007, 01:51:56 pm

Is anyone planning to compete in this event?  I think it would be a great opportunity to try some of the things we learned at the cooking class.  We're very seriously considering this event but we have to check out schedules before we can commit.

Vince, I'm with you.  Too early to tell.  I have to see where we are with finances at that time.

I really hope to as I also would like to put some of that new found knowledge to work.  ;)

Guys, this would be a fantastic contest to "Get your feet wet", so if you are on the edge about competing in it, I say "Go For It".  If nothing more than the experience.

Hope to see you all out there.  ;)

Another thing that makes this event friendly to everyone is the low entry fee.  Only $25 per meat category so just $100 for the whole enchilada.  That is mighty appealing to us right now.

One other thing...even if you don't plan to compete, it might be a great opportunity to be a judge.  That would certainly give a diferent perspective on things and probably offer some valuable insight.

Copied from Aaron on the AZBBQA site:

OK, I am ready to start taking registration for the four meat contest. This is going to be a laid back contest like the Hoof & Foot where everyone can come out and cook and party a little. The contest is in late April so it will be hot during the day. There will be about 4-6 spaces available under the shed in the shade. They are first registered first served so if you want them, register early. Anyone who wants to stay out until Sunday is also welcome to do so. This is a fun oppurtunity for some of you newer members to come out and meet some of the cookers and eat some really good food.

Everyone can come out as early on Friday as they want. Friday night we will have a potluck in the bar. I will supply pulled pork and beans unless someone else wants to cook meat for Friday night. I am open to suggestions. The bar will be open for poker, music, and anything else that we are interested in doing. Maybe Mark and Hombre will do some table dances. You have to bring your own alcohol though. I am interested in making this a fun event for Friday night so if anyone has any ideas let me know. Anyone wants to come out and campout and enjoy the potluck is welcome, including non-memebers. I am also taking names for judges, so if you know someone who is interested in judging have them register with me. I am also looking for a few volunteers to help run the contest, so if anyone has a little time that would be great.

When:
April 27th-28th

Where:
Saddle Sore Ranch (Hoof & Foot location). Queen Creek, AZ

Entry is $25 per category. I am going to try to get some sponsor $$$ but payout will depend on the number of teams that register for the contest. There is also an anything goes which will be $10, winner take all.

Send a check payable to AZBBQA with your:
Team Name
Head Cook
Address
Phone number

to Aaron Shreeve
2532 N. Horne
Mesa, AZ
85203
I also have a flyer that I can send. E Mail me if you want it.  bloodofheroes@cox.net

Dont be shy. Feel free to call me at 480-329-8728 if you have any questions. And like I said, everyone is welcome to come out.

I just posted a question in the AZBBQA board thread about whether this event will be using KCBS or IBCA guidelines for meats and turn in boxes.  I'll post the answer here when we get one.

I also do not know at this time if I can make it.I REALLY do hope the turn out is better than the Hoof and Foot,it would be better for the association that way, and it would be more fun to have more teams and more people.I am going to look at my schedule this weekend and see what I can do about getting in on this event, but may not be able to do it though.

Although it will be a little while before we know for sure if we can compete, I do believe that we'll volunteer to judge if competing doesn't work out.  Our first hope, though, is to compete.

You WILL be able to compete. When do you really know if you can't compete? We didn't win our first grand championship until our fifth year. That doesn't mean it will take YOU that long. It takes alot of practice and persistence to start getting those trips to the stage consistantly. But if that's what you want, you will do it. This is like any other sport, you only get back what you put into it. I don't know of any teams that gave up once they started. They may not all be winning GC's, but none have given up.
Don't mean to sound like a high school football coach, just talking from our experience. We had some very frustrating times along the way and I'm sure there's some to come yet.

Jay, that was like a message from the BBQ Gods!

Our only reservation right now has to do with business scheduling.  I'm self-employed and if something really big comes in for either of those days I'll have to be responsible and work.  (Damn the responsibility, damn it to Hell!!)

I have no doubt that we'll have our successes along the way and I know that the only way we'll get there is to enter the events.  We've definitely got the desire but that doggone job gets in the way now and then.

The one thing I think that matters most at this point is to support the events in any way possible, whether it be by competing, judging or helping to organize.

Hey VQ,

I'm coming out from Cal. to do this event. I'm going to go ahead and sign up for all four meats. If you decide at the last minute you want to do it, you can come and cook with me. I'll have both WSM's with me. You can bring your WSM and pick a meat or two to do, and we can split the cost accordingly. I need practice on everything, and I certainly don't have a specialty yet, so I'm not particular about what I turn in. Plus, I may be cooking by myself.

I do have 2 WSM's and a kettle if someone needs to borrow them. I think I might come out and have a few cold ones with you guys. Maybe they need help judging.

Post by: VisionQuest220 on March 05, 2007, 01:52:10 pm
Jay, we might just take you up on the WSM loaner offer!  In fact, if we are able to compete, we'll definitely take you up on it!  That's really a generous offer and very much appreciated.

If we compete then we're likely going to do all four meats ourselves.  We really need the opportunity to do it all as this may be one of the only four meat comps that we can do in advance of Taylor & Lake Pleasant.  I don't want you to think your offer is unappreciated and I'd be willing to bet that there are some other people here that would team up with you right away.  I know there are some folks who don't have any teammates yet and would jump at the chance to share the cooking responsibilities with someone.

I hope this comes across as honest and sincere and not as just brushing off your offer.  I've rewritten it a couple of times and just want to make sure I don't hurt your feelings.

Hey VQ,

No worries. I didn't take it that way at all. And besides, it takes a lot more than that to hurt my feelings. I just figured I'd give you another option.......

Hopefully, you'll make it out and we can show them what the WSM's can do.

Jay, You should definitely come out.......

I haven't got an award myself yet...well no ribbons, plaques, or trophies. Just getting out there and doing your best is good enough. Being able to spend the time with the other teams...the people at these events, is the best reward.

You were the inspiration behind this event amigo. Without your input at the Hoof & Foot I wouldnt have bothered with it. I am going to be bummed if you dont make it.

P.S. I have a fuynny feeling that turnout is going to be much better than the Hoof & Foot. Especially since I already have that many teams signed up.  :o

Aaron,

That's awesome, I really hope it turns out to be a huge success.  I am trying to work it out that I can compete, and if not compete, at least judge.  I am due to compete the following weekend at the Stagecoach in Indio and I don't know if I can get away from the job for 2 weekends in a row, but if I can, I will certainly be there.

Let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

Mike

I don 't think I can do 2 weekends in a row either. My wife can't take the time off 2 weekends in a row and it would be hectic for me as well.I wish there was an extra weeknd in between Stagecoach and the Queen Creek event, then I could do it.

These dates are crazy to work with I have guys in Northern Caliif wondering why I am on the date I am
Like I set the concert date  Clovis moved to the weekend before Silent Valley so I have to change my date once more
I am now in mid Sept with Silent Valley the 15th, if the Silent Valley Board approves it

OK, I have at least four teams who have said that the weekend of April 27th is not going to work for them. There is a contest in Cali on the next weekend so that puts contests back to back. Would it work better for everyone if we moved the contest date to April 20th and 21st?? I am not saying that I will change it for sure, but if anyone objects E Mail me and let me know, especially if you have already registered. Its hard making this work for everyone, but I will do my best.

Thom, sorry I didnt call you back last week. We were running late so we didnt have time to stop off in Indio.

Aaron,  I can't speak for anyone else, but NASCAR is that previous weekend.  I know I will be out there cooking, so I will not be available to do both.

Aaron next time through just call We live a half mile off I 10 by the Auto Mall in Indio
I am sorry about the dates how far forward could you move it and still be able to get the deal organized?
How many of your target teams are cooking the Autry on April 14th?

Aaron, I think it is really great that you're willing to move the date of the competition so that as many people as possible can not only attend but also compete.  When we realized that the Saddle Sore and Stagecoach events were back to back it put tremendous pressure on us too.  I don't have any conflicts with the proposed April 20 & 21 dates although others including, Thom & Mike, are already committed to the NASCAR event.  Another idea would be to push the date back to May 18 & 19 but that means the weather will be warmer and I'm sure that was something you were trying to avoid when picking a date in the first place.  The lousy thing is that its impossible to pick a date that will work for everyone.

Please let us all know if you do decide to change the date and thanks for effort.

I could do the saddle sore if it was either 2 weeks before Indio or 2 weeks after. For me april 20,21 would work ok.

I've fallen a little behind on getting registered. I was planning on getting it in this week. I might not be able to do the 4/20 date, so I'll hold off on sending my reg. in until you guys decide. I totally understand if it works better for the majority to move the date.

Glen, the date is still the 28th.  It is too late in the game to change it and besides, there is always going to be something going on each weekend for someone.

this is the info i have on saddle sore cookoff

7214 E. Arizona Farms Road, Queen Creek, AZ

This is the same venue as The Hoof and Foot Contest in January. Because it was such a success and well liked area, we are expanding on it. If you are not familiar, Saddle Sore Ranch is an old western ghost town – perfect for our barbeque events. It was built by Aaron Shreeve’s father, Curtis.  It is a site to see and for a (wooden) nickel, you can bargain for a tour.

There are spaces available in the shade but those are first come first served. You are welcome to arrive as early on Friday as you want. We plan to have a potluck in the bar on Friday night. Anyone can also register as a judge.

This is a cookoff and campout – MEMBERS AND NON-MEMBERS WELCOME!!!

Please contact Aaron Shreeve with any questions, 480-329-8728, bloodofheroes@cox.net

Please fill out bottom portion and mail to AZBBQA, Aaron Shreeve, 2532 N Horne, Mesa AZ 85203

Each category is $25. Anything Goes is $10. Please make checks payable to AZBBQA.

If you do a Googlemaps.com search for 7214 E. Arizona Farms road it maps it perfectly.

You are going to take the U.S.60 to Ellsworth and then go south. You will go through Queen Creek and then Ellsworth loops to the left. After the left turn you will be on Hunt Highway. Take Hunt Highway for about ten miles. You will go through Johnson Ranch and once you are headed out of town again start looking for a left turn called Arizona Farms Road. There is no light or stop sign. Its just a left hand turn. Once on Arizona Farms Road you will cross one set of tracks and just before your come to the second set you will turn left and follow the driveway all the way to the back. There you will find me sitting in the shade with the dog on one side of me and a ice chest full of cold beer on the other.

If you have any questions or you get lost feel free to call me.

How are everyone's preparations going?

I made a run over to the Costco Business Center today and picked up a couple of 40 lb. bags of El Diablo mesquite lump charcoal, pork butts, spare ribs and a couple of candy thermometers to run through the lid of my WSMs.  Two of the three WSMs we're bringing out are brand spanking new so I had to get the water pans lined with foil, filled with sand and then lined again with foil to catch the drippings.  (Kudos once again to the BBQCZAR, Lord of Soggy Barbeque for that clever trick.)  We're making our rubs tonight and then packing everything up tomorrow morning.
