Title: Re: A$$ Kickin BBQ Cook-off - Avondale Charity Event
Post by: Mike (AZBarbeque) on January 07, 2008, 10:12:32 pm
Main Competition Entry Fee is $200, electric is another $25...

Weekend Warrior Entry Fee is $30 per category or $100 for all 4 Categories.  (Teams in this Weekend Warrior Competition must use A$$ Kickin Sauce products.)

E-mail me at Competition@AZBarbeque.com and I can e-mail you the registration forms for both.  The file sizes are too big to post here.  I will see if my web guy can get them posted on the main page tomorrow.

Hey all, just heard back from the City of Avondale Fire Dept.  You can't have a Propane tank larger than 5 gallon on school grounds, so take notice of this as you prepare your rigs.

Yes, as long as neither one is larger than 5 gallon.  You can have multiple from what I understand.

Apparently they do not want one BIG explosion, but rather many smaller ones...

Please forgive the capitalist nature of the following questions and comment but someone has to ask so it might as well be me.

What is the total prize pool for the 4 meat Competitor event (excluding the Weekend Warrior portion) and is there a limitation on the number of teams that can compete?  I see on the entry form that only 3 places in each category are being paid and GC and RC payouts seem pretty small for a $200 entry fee.
Title: Re: A$$ Kickin BBQ Cook-off - Avondale Charity Event
Post by: force on January 10, 2008, 06:33:12 am
The total pay out for the competitor division is $2500.00..... Also, each team will receive 4 passes to the VIP dinner on Friday night...... we are also working on some other items that could be donated (like meats and a new twist for winning money) for the competitors to use... no guarantee on that yet.......... Keep in mind, this is a first time charity event and we should have a better idea in mid February of attendance and number of teams....... if we meet a target number, we will certainly raise the prize money amounts........ Right now no limitatiion on number of teams.......Force

Post by: VisionQuest220 on January 10, 2008, 10:26:41 am
Force, thanks for the reply.  I think we'll need to take a wait and see approach to determine if this event is economically feasible for us to participate in.

Follow up:  I decided to add to my original post and add a more detailed explanation of my position.

It's not that I'm just a raging, heartless capitalist who has no time for charities but rather an honest assessment of the economics of the event.  As many of you know, competition barbeque is an expensive hobby and perhaps even more so for those of us who are self employed as we have to factor in lost wages from time spent not working as well as all of the other costs associated with competing.  Just looking at the basic costs of this particular event, the numbers go something like this:

Entry Fee................................$200
Electricity.................................$25
Meat........................................$100
Other Supplies.........................$25
Trailer Rental (2 days).............$65

Total..........................................$415  (This obviously does not include lost wages from missing work)

With payouts at this event being what they are, we would have to have one heck of a successful competition just to break even on the basic costs let alone begin to compensate for lost wages.  The ratio of cost to return on investment is so narrow that it makes the very act of competing damn near a charitable one.  If the barbeque competition is the draw for the event then the competitors need a better chance to cover their costs.  Most teams only have so much money to spend each year on events and it has to be spent as wisely as possible.

I hope this helps to better explain my hesitation in signing up to compete in this event.

School wont let you do Peoples Choice?
Those payouts make this size contest work
I have  3 like this in 2008
Title: Re: A$$ Kickin BBQ Cook-off - Avondale Charity Event
Post by: Mike (AZBarbeque) on January 10, 2008, 03:13:46 pm
We do have a People's Choice.  It is $1 per ticket for the public with 75% going back to the competitors.  Not too bad...
Title: Re: A$$ Kickin BBQ Cook-off - Avondale Charity Event
Post by: Thom Emery on January 10, 2008, 04:49:22 pm
Will you use standardized containers for distribution to the public?

75 cents  What weight on sample size?
Very difficult to do Ribs for that
Pork Butt yes,  Non Turn in Meats yes
Title: Re: A$$ Kickin BBQ Cook-off - Avondale Charity Event
Post by: BBQCZAR on January 10, 2008, 06:25:59 pm
Yes,what type of containers are we to use for peoples choice ? I am thinking the same white paper hot dog trays from Smart and Final or Cosco right ? Problem also is that with this being a new contest no one can be sure how many people will be there or how many will buy peoples choice tickets.I would hate to make alot of meat and have to bring it all or most home.I am only going to make the amount I would for a normal comp,I guess play it safe is a good rule here. And Thom is right, can't really do ribs for 75 cents and dangerous to make alot and have them not bought.

I know that Chris and the Organizers of the event are hoping to get a meat sponsor that could potentially donate some of the non competition meats for the people's choice.

Chris, any word on this yet??

At $1.00 that hotdog tray is too big
Hell at 2 it is too big
Smart and Final has some smaller plastic cups
You will need forks or spoons
I am sorry I just cant see the $1.00 sample working in 2008
Stagecoach maybe $2.50 ten others in CA will $2.00
Meat costs too much to sell for a dollar
I understand families costs etc
At 25 cents you wont raise much cash
Go at least $1.50, teams get $1.00
charity 50 cents
sell for 1.50 each or 7 for $10.00
and they get a deal
That is a deal
Charity supplies standardized cups and cheap forks or spoons
happy?

Man, that's just cold.  Doesn't seem like a $200 entry fee to shoot for a $275 Best Booth is a very sound piece of decision making.

Honestly, I'm not sure on this one yet.  We decided to do the Pulte event and see how things go.  If by some miracle we win some money at Pulte, then I'll probably do this event.  Otherwise it's just not in my budget.

I have been thinking about judging a few locally since I can probably swing that expense.

Hey all, Here's where we stand on this event.

4 Meat contest plus Best Booth.  All paying off as follows:

1st place: $275.00
2nd place: $125.00
3rd place:  $75.00
4th-6th place: Medals

Reserve GC pays - $250
Grand Champion pays - $350

That's a $3000 Prize fund for this competition and an additional $1000 for the Weekend Warrior Portion of the event for a total prize package of $4000 Cash.  With Trophies & Medals, that's pretty close to $4500.  Event includes Free Electricity & Free Ice.  Not a bad return on investment for your $200 entry fee.  Most contests today are higher than this one to get into.

We will also be doing the People's choice for $2/ticket with $1/ticket coming directly back to each of you, so there's more opportunity to get some $$$ in your pockets.

We want more competitions here in the valley and this is shaping up to be a fun one.  If they get more sponsors, they will increase the prize fund.

We do hope to see all of you out there.

DeWALT is also one of the big sponsors for this event and we are working with them to get some items donated for the winners as well, so it will be worth coming out and having a great time.  ;)  Get your entries in soon...

Mike sounds like you got it going on there.
just a note Guys Modesto entry is $300
Stagecoach will probably be $500 total
 (for two contests)
The old $125 contest is gone
Any sanctioned contest is $150
KCBS has to be $200
In April I have one in Anaheim It will probably be
$150, Hesperia should be $150, La Quinta Should be $200
it is a KCBS State Championship

Glad to see you went to the Western Standard Peoples Choice $2.00
$1.00 back to the teams
The show of PC is fun for the crowd

A guy could do a small  Kids Hot Dog for a $2.00 ticket
would that work Mike? or No?

We are also excited to announce in addition to the Competitors and Weekend Warriors Categories.......... We also have a category for Police Departments, Fire Departments, and Military Services..........

We already have teams from Luke Air Force Base Fighter Country Partnership and Avondale Fire Department.  We are also working on the Army, Navy and Marines to enter as well..... And more police and fire departments are jumping on board.

There will be a great military presence (many families in our large community are Air Force and Army, with many deployed in the middle east) with the Luke Color Guard openning the ceremonies right after the "Fun Run" and closing the day with TAPS........ and the "General" will be a judge for the competition.........Luke Air Force Base is in the Litchfield School District Boundries.........

And we are working on a "Black Hawk" landing on site and being available for the entire event for people to climb on board and check out........ This will be a great "PATRIOTIC EVENT" to support...................

This fantastic Patriotic and Charity Event will certainly provide assistance to the beneficiaries (Luke Fighter Country Partnership, Southwest YMCA and Litchfield School District)... The TAPS Program with Luke, provides assistance to military families in need.  The YMCA's Activate America will be starting a new program for obese children............

We look forward to the competitors coming out and smokin' great meats and showing support to these fine organizations and the community of the Far West Valley................... HOO Ah................................................... Force

By the way, my team Tex's Smokehouse on Wheels will be competiting..................... and I know Mike has a thrown down coming..........

I would like to suggest that all future events, REALLY let the public pick the peoples choice award, not by how many people purchased tickets that went into the jar.  depending where you BBQ stand is, you may be the last one in a row, and folks tend to go to the first booth.  would rather the pick be on taste,  not purchase.  when we buy tickets for samples, give us a form to mark to select those we like the best.

Linda,  First off, welcome to the site, great to have you on here.  Hope you enjoy all it has to offer.

For most of our People's Choice, we do have a way of determining a winner that is not based on tickets, however, for this contest we did not.

The way we normally work it is that for every 10 taste tickets a person purchases, they get 1 vote ticket.  Then, after they taste all the food they want, then they go back and give that one taste ticket to the competitor they liked the best.  Since we did not have a prize for People's Choice at this event, we did not do that.

Hope to see you at more events in the future.  This A$$ Kickin one is really shaping up to be a great one.

What are the turn-in times for the meats ? Also ,who is judging this event ? Are there going to be certified BBQ judges for this event ? If not,how will the judges know what to look for or what to taste for ? You have to have some CBJ's to properly judge this event.Common people will not know what to look for.
Title: Re: A$$ Kickin BBQ Cook-off - Avondale Charity Event
Post by: Mike (AZBarbeque) on January 28, 2008, 02:21:12 pm
Turn in times will be the same as this past weekend.

Chicken - 11 am
Ribs - Noon
Pork - 1 pm
Brisket - 2 pm
Awards 4 pm

Judging will be similar to what we had this past weekend and what you normally see at IBCA events.  Mostly general public with a few CBJ's to help out.  All the judges are given a brief run down on what to look for and how to judge and score.  We have printouts that they all get and from the results of this past weekend, it is still very consistant with a normal KCBS contest.  We saw that out at Rawhide as well with the two contests going side by side.

Of the 7 teams signed up and registered already, 4 are proud owners of Diamond Plate Smokers.

Just thought that was a cool stat.

I know of at least 2 more Diamond Plate smoker owners who will be signing up as well.  Should be a great contest.

Where's Marty?????

If my memory serves, his Spicewine produced two 2nd place meats this past weekend, the Briskit missing first place by 2/10000 of a point!

Still don't know if we can make this event.  The bad thing is that it looks like I probably won't know until the weekend of the 23rd, which may take us out of the event as I don't see anything about entry cutoff on the thread.

And it was the ribs that missed first by 2/10000th, brisket was still close with Tim, but we missed by about 3 points.

Maybe G$ will show up with his twin of my spicewine.  Looks the same except the doors are hinged on the left side.

Mike, I wouldn't get too excited about desserts.

We had an awful result at Boulder City last year and turned it in anyway.   Got dead last, but that means the judges actually tasted it.

I'll let you know as soon as I can if we're in or not.

People's Choice will start after the first turn in, so around 11:15 or so and run until 3 pm when the awards start.

They will be the same format at the Pulte event.  You turn your tickets in before the awards presentation, then go back after to claim your $$$..

Chris will let you know the details of the dinner on Friday..  ;)

Bwahahahahahahaha!!!   At least you haven't lost your sense of humor.

Now that I know you're reading the posts, could you please take a few minutes and give us all a complete rundown of the event?  So many changes have taken place since this event was announced and I think it would be very much appreciated by all of us who are competing to hear all the details from you.

Thanks

Any last minute teams wanting to register and compete at this event?  We still have some room available.

Remember, it's an official DeWALT Triple Crown of BBQ event, so points will be earned.  We are working on some pretty cool prize and possible money awards at the end of the year based on the points standings.  Don't miss out.

Besides, this is going to be a really fun event.

Hope to see everyone out there..  ;)

Hey Desert Dog,

We have a dirt one acre lot adjacent to the east parking lot you could use.... there is no power.. nothing but dirt...... you would need to pull all the way up to the cyclone fence next to the playground...... you would be about 250 yds from competitors........ your vehicle would still be on school grounds......... right now that's the best we can do........ after everything is set up... we could see........ no promises though........

Bob, yes, you can pay at the door.  Come on out and join us for a great dinner.

The Throwdown was originally supposed to happen between the Sponsor of the event, A$$ Kickin & AZBarbeque, but A$$ Kickin had something come up and couldn't do it so Chris, as the principal of the school we will be at, offered to fill that space.  He thinks he will have the crowd on his side.

Wait until they get a taste of my riblets....  :o  ;D
