Title: What is the best Expanded Steel to use for smoker Grates?
Post by: DStew on November 05, 2011, 01:34:20 pm
OK so building an offset with two 20" x 30" doors....anyone got a suggestion on what the best

1/2 inch #13 expanded flattened steel (52% open space)
1/2 inch #16 expanded flattened steel (63% open space)
3/4 inch #9  expanded flattened steel (63% open space)

My hunch is that the 3/4 inch #9 is the way to go but I am a mere neophyte when it comes to steel........

UPDATE:  GOT THE 3/4 inch #9 "Flat" from Industrial Metal supply for $57 for a 4x8 sheet 8)

Thanks,

Daryl

3/4 inch #9 is best and price is not all that bad about $56 for a 4x8 sheet at Industrial Metal Supply. If your grates are too large it will require some bracing to keep the grate from flexing too much.

# 9  expanded metal is a good choice. What would be recomened for max length width and length of the expanded metal and the size and type of the grate?
