Title: My first patio smoker is completed & delivered to the customer!
Post by: Smokin_Turkey on August 03, 2009, 06:34:30 am
Back at Williepallooza in march I think it was, I met Anthony Valois who was part of the team, Long Island Luau. Anthony wanted a patio size rig to cook a pig, warming cabinet, and liked the basic design of my mini as a start.

Over the months we talked out a design, included some mods, purchased about 800lbs of steel, some thermo's, a couple wheels, some paint, and I began building on it 3 weeks ago.

So 3 weeks later, many cuts, scrapes, minor burns, a few serious burns, a summer cold, and a lot of man hours later, I was able to deliver Anthony's rig on his birthday this last Friday out on Staten Island.

What follows is the complete build and delivery of this build. Enjoy and thanks for looking!

I have a bunch of jobs to catch up on since the build was only scheduled for 2 weeks. Mostly grates and branding irons. A few hitch covers, and I think when things slow up a bit, I want to build a unit similar for myself. I plan to compete next year and could use something like this to work from.

I am very impressed!!  I love how you can open the end and pull the entire rack out!!  I can also appreciate the flow control you put in on the verticle smoke box, as some of the round ones, like the ones on my Lang, can be a little "loose" with the control of the flow.  Very nicely done.  Is there a reason why it wasn't painted??  Just curious.  Keep up the nice work!!

Thanks! Actually I did paint it but the new brand of paint I tried on it didnt coat as well as i would have liked. It also wasn't fired to cure the paint before I had to move it in a heavy rain to the trailer. It cleaned up very nice once fired and the rust wiped off. He touched it up the following morning in a few places but wasnt too difficult. I wont be using the rustolium brand grill paint anymore. Some one had recommended it to me as a better paint than I had been using but I found this not to be the case! lol.

That thing absolutely rocks.

GREAT job on that unit.  I bet you wont have any trouble selling a few more.

Thanks for the pictures, and again, it looks awesome.

That is STEENKEEN GORGEOUS!! Fantastic design, once I rewound and looked again. And to think I'm getting excited about drilling 16 hole and saying I built a smoker...(UDS) Wow. And what Lizard said about the pull out lower rack. Great design.

Hey, we all gotta start someplace. A guy who placed at the Jack told me once, its not the cooker, it's the cook.

What kind of paint do you normally use?  I have a fire box on my Lang that needs to be repainted, and wondered what you used.

Glad you liked your branding iron! I usually use header paint. It comes in tons of colors and I can even get it mixed for a custom job. When it cures, it's very durable and thick. I used a ceramic based mix without epoxies. That way it's food safe not that any of it comes in contact with food anyway.

That Pit ROCKS!!!  I love the slide out grill rack!  Do you get good temps in the tubular grill?  That hole looks a little small.
