Title: Double barrel build?
Post by: revgodless on July 20, 2010, 02:07:48 pm
So, my guys and I, though we love just doing our Que in my makeshift smokers, want to compete and we're looking to build something more suitable than what I do with my cardboard boxes.

We found plans for a double barrel smoker and are getting the gear together to trick it out in a strangely bizarre way, has anyone seen a smoker like this in action? How'd it do?

We're making the topside out of two barrels and going to build it on a trailer.

i have seen that before. the only thing the guy said he had to watch out about was grease getting into the lower chamber and catching on fire. unfortunately i don't know how well they cook or don't cook.

so, putting some pans in over the two flues into the cooking chamber would be a good idea...

awesome...

Are you getting the kit? I've seen a kit advertised that has the braces and flues, as well as smokestack and dampers; comes with the plans. I'll check out the other forums...and here too...there is a thread about the big baby here. Link coming as soon as I find it.

Here ya go. A search with "big baby" didn't work. Hmpf!

Well, I don't know abou a BBQ kit. What I am doing is going to use 2 55 gal. drums, a barrel stove kit and a double barrel stove kit, in addition to the extra couple of pieces from the stove manufacture to make the second channel, some scrap metal and some expanded steel for the cooking grate....

Really think I am going to need some help for the cooking grate, might have to find someone that can help me make that for cheap. I've priced out everything else....

Thanks for that link, by the way, gives me a good idea as to what it's going to look like....

alright,so I'm ordering stuff, but one thing I can't find is a good supplier for some expanded metal to use as a grill or grate!

Look for a metal surplus shop - they have all kinds of stuff - you might have to be patient to find the exact expanded size you want / need or the amount but it should be cheap.  Next you can try a metal supply house.  Lots of sheet metal suppliers carry expanded metal and they usually have a shear so you cna have them cut the pieces to size - you're probably gonna have to buy a full sheet but you probably need most of one sheet anyway.  They will probably charge you a buck or two per cut.

Last you can find a metal fabrication or welding shop.  They have access to the metal and should have a way to cut it - either with a torch or shear.

PM / E-mail me if you want to verify a price - give me the specs / guage, expanded metal size and or the service rate they want to charge you to cut the metal and I'll let you know if it's a good deal.

Or you can drive to San Diego and I can get it for you! ;D

Thanks Meat! I'll keep it in mind, and I will definitely run the price pass you before I make the purchase.  the only other issue I think i have is knowing what gauge would work.. I have never thought to do this kind of thing, I've always purchased already built or scrounged through. Not kidding my big smoker right now is a cardboard box with an oven shelf inside and some pans on wire with a cast iron underneath it.

I know that buying the expanded metal from Home Depot or something is not going to work, I think it's too small and it'd be about 30-40 bucks to get enough...  plus they only carry galvanized piping, so I had to buy the stove piping elsewhere...

At least my chiopractor is giving my project cash so it's not going to be nearly all on me, right? so long as I hand out his info and have a flyer at any booth or event I do ( plus save him some leftovers. LOL)

I don't know where you live, but Davis Scrap Metals (or some name like that) at 33rd STREET and Washington in Phoenix has expanded metal. I bought a chunk of #9X3/4 4 feet by 2 feet that has made a wonderful firebox and charcoal grate for my 2 smokers. That stuff is impervious! It'd make great grate. heh! And I paid $15. A full 4X8 sheet is a bunch more--I don't know how much. But they have a scrapped trimmings area full of neat metal. Damn I wish i could weld.

I feel your pain!!!
That's one of the reasons I am going for this build... there's no stinking welding needed!

Thanks for the tip- though I am out here in mesa by greenfield and brown... I will check them out. I got 140 form my chiropractor for the ordering and building of this smoker ( he wants to sponsor my competition team)
