Hey everyone,

I am looking for tips, experiences on building your own professional smoker. I want to use some pretty heavy gauge metal, so no 55 gallon drum smoker plans here please. I like the idea that some have done with an old air tank but I can't find one much less really want one that big.

I would love to find a source for the metal, I can fabricate and weld so as long as I get the metal I think that would be my biggest problem. Also the type of paint used.

I am building this with the idea of using wood only in my smoker.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

IMS in PHX is were I get my metal. There are two kinds that you can buy pickled or non. Pickled metal is chemically treated to remove the mil scale, which makes it easy to paint. You can also look around at place that do heavy construction work. They use schedule 40 pipe to lay sewer networks. Drive around and look in their yard you may find a nice scrape section of pipe that they are willing to sell. Also think outside the box. Pits don's always need to be round.  As for paint I use stove paint from a company in Eugene Oregon. Rated at 1200 degree and food compatible. You can buy a HVLP Sprayer and paint it with that . They sell it in gallon can and will ship. Give me a call if you need anything.

And look at Davis Metals on Washington near 32nd Street. They have remnants of expanded metal, as well as full sheets.

For cooking, lower and slower. For spices, mo' hotter, mo' better. Habaneros rule!
