Vertical Smoker

Gents I have enjoyed all the feed back from all the Arizona BBQ Members reference building and improving the smokers and grills that I build. I am currently building two more Smokers for clients in CA. Thanks to Jeremys Grill I have incorporated some changes into the vertical smoker. I also added many vents at the fire box. Each vent can be open or closed. Enjoy viewing the photos and post any comments that you like. I have contemplated the insulated version, adds to the price and frankly I don't think the market for the BackYard BBQuer wants to pay that. However, I am researching a blanket that will fit over the smoker with access to the door and firebox door which will not increase the smoker price by hundreds. but insulate it nicely.

the Oil industry has custom blanket company that can make something like that for $1000.... full thermal radiant heat blanket. they use it to insulate valve.

I bought two moving blankets fro $70 and I am able to retain enough heat (35 to 50F)depending on the weather.

cheers

What I was thinking of as a insulating blanket is the same material that dominos uses to keep there pizzas warm. The blankets you mentioned I have thought of also. Once I have the dimensions down I have a friend that could sew and make coats for them. :)

I wonder if the Fiberglas insultation that is foil-sided and comes in panels would work?

Hmm that is a good thought. I wonder Wich side would need to face out. A shiny reflective surface or dull.

We use products from this company for commercial kitchen ducting.  Looks like they make all types of materials.  It is spendy for us but who know.....maybe contact and ask...

Foil sided fiber glass would work but only to a certain degree (no temp pun intended). The foil is a foil scrim paper (FSK) and is used as a protective layer to the fiber glass in industrial and commercial applications however it is not a weather protective layer. It also does not totally incapsulate the fiberglass meaning the sides and undersides are unprotected. This would result in vulnerability to moisture. When fiberglass insulation gets wet it loses all R values. Add that to the fact the fiberglass insulation tends to shed fibers as it is not tightly woven and you're now exposing your food to fine slivers of glass every time you disturb the blanket by opeing the door. Not good.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I am looking into a material referred to as Rock Wool. I believe it is the same material that you are referring to. I am going to see how economical it is. Have it sewn between to layers of weather proof material so that it custom fits my smoker. allowing one to put it over much like a car cover. but allow the door to open.
