Title: nightmare on the rez
Post by: ron b on May 27, 2009, 07:56:18 am
well what a ***** weekend as i said i was going to cook for wife's family on the Navajo res this holiday weekend on my brand new excel.

day 1 80mph winds non stop rain thru Monday morning when we left :o

day 2 mud, mud, and yes mud canopy took a joyride thru the desert still in a gulch somewhere i believe.
broke out the excel and said to myself is this a good idea <<HELL NO!!>>

after 14lbs of charcoal in 40deg weather i managed to get to 190 whoohoooo!!!

so cant turn back now so as i lay my 16lb brisket on my beautiful 20 the legs benton the grill as i lurched and fell into the mud hmmmmm so i sat down laughed my ass off and grabbed a beer 545 am why not. got back up on the ole horse bent legs back basically just stuck it in the mud had no choice got it rolling .come sunday 2-3 pull brisket at 170 wrapped and in da cooler it went only cause i was out of beer >:D started chicken finished it then decided to do so reindeer hotdogs buffalo burgers and buffalo steaks. as i let the charcoal burn out i look over to see her grandma throw a slab of mutton on the grill hmmm OK why not so we will see this next cook how the 20 smells up the meat,

so all in all could have been better .
thoughts on the 20 decent for the $$ but they should have maybe put stronger legs on them and insulated handels every time i open the doors i got a Ching Ching ching.
also i found as it was a good idea it was hard to get any probes through the hole.

so how was your weekend???
Lol

One thing I have learned Ron, BBQing is ALWAYS an adventure.

Sounds like you had a fun adventure..  :o  ;D

I did read on their UK site that there was an issue with the legs and they have a retrofit available for purchase.  I don't know if this is just in the UK though or if you can get it delivered here as well.

No Pictures of you in the Mud, huh??  ;D

Sorry about all the mishaps but it sounds like you took it all in stride!  So how did the brisket turn out?

On the Excel...does yours have the little piece of extra metal riveted within the leg?  I know it is hard to explain but i was pleasantly surprised when I put mine together and it had the updated legs already, so i was wondering if I might have an issue with these legs also might try and make up some heavy duty ones just encase!

Mine also had the new legs on it and I installed 3 holes for probes. There is also a way to install small wood dowels on the door handles so there is not burnt fingers.I got mine with updated legs and stacker for $75,that was way worth it.I now have a DigiQ II connected to it and I will give it a trial run this weekend, should be interesting. :)

Insulated cookers, that's all I am saying.  ;D

Too heavy to fly away, to well insulated to care about the weather.

Hey your lucky I got one and mine didnt have any legs nor did it have any screws nor meat hooks SO needless to say I was pretty pissed when I opened the box. I think we are going to try to build some legs for it I just cant see spending another 40 bucks just for upgraded legs we will see what happens besides I also have my 22"WSM  so its all good.

Those are all in the same bag so I can see where that bag being missing would be a real bummer...

I will take a pic of the legs on mine tonight so you can see how they "upgraded" them, might be easy to rig something up.

Weber has excellent customer service and sends out parts that were missing right away.

How is Pro-Q's customer service?

Pro-Q said they have nothing to do with the smokers here in Az. So they will sell anything you need+shipping. We are going to make them no biggie.

I heard that from 2 other people, they hacve left some people high and dry when buying new units and having missing parts from them.I would never have bought one if it wasn't for the $75 price,I would have bought another WSM for sure.I wonder why Pro-Q won't help anyone, maybe because they lost their  AZZ on all thse units at auction  ???

In the search to find Mark some legs. I found that there is a problem with the old style legs. After talking to the folks in the UK they said they would sale the up graded legs plus shipping would let me know cost. they also directed me to

fredsmusicandbbq.com

I talk with Fred who informed me that the old style legs are very dangerous and once smoker is loaded there is a good chance it's going down. He sales the up graded kit for the excel 20 smoker for a low price ( LOL ) of $39.99.

FWIW...Here are what my legs look like.  ;)

I am not saying it good customer support or even good PR but you can kind of understand not wanting to send out free stuff for a bunch of units that were sold at auction...they have no control over what happened to the units (opened, damaged, stuff missing etc, ect) during the entire time leading up to and including the auction.

Still sucks but if you think about it...its understandable.  Now if you got it direct or from FREDS and they are not stepping up...well that's an entirely different deal.

BTW we loaded a 20lbs turkey on an EXCEL with out upgraded legs and it did not even budge...I will upgrade before I use that one again but at the time i had no idea.

Kidcurry, thanks for posting the picture. That is a picture of the upgraded legs. If you don't have the center brace they are the old dangerous legs.

Well, that's good to know as the ones I have both have those type of legs.  Glad I got the upgraded ones.

I did send Ian a message asking if they would help us order some retro fit legs.  I will let you know what he says..

With 3 pieces of metal and some bolts anyone can modify their existing legs very easily.Just follow that picture and would take a very short time to do all three.

Guys I just finished bending my new legs I used a leg from my 22.5 wsm as a templete. I used 1/8 x 2" aluminum was not all that cheap but will work very well I am going to grill sargents to finish them I will post some pictures using his camara since mine got submerged in margarita mix at stagecoach. But that another story.  Will post soon

I am having new legs made for my WSM and Pro-Q from a metal fab guy up here in north Phoenix. The ones even on my WSM bend a little and this metal guy is going to totaly make them over using heavy duty aluminum bar stock.I will see exactly how much they are this weeknd and I will let everyone know how much a set would be so if anyone wants some. The ones made will have a  metal disc welded on bottom of each leg and will be 10 times as strong and way more stable for using the stacker units.
