Title: Product Comparison
Post by: jim on January 02, 2008, 12:30:10 pm
I purchased a Rival Food Saver from Walmat about 5 months a go, started finding that it would take several tries sometimes to close a vacum bag. Did some reading and found the Food Saver it self is a highly rated vacum food sealer. Picked up the model V2830 from Sam's for $120.00 --- what a difference one touch and one try every time ---- BIG thumbs up on this product

I agree. We love ours. It's so easy we need a bigger freezer.  ;D

Jim, I agree with you about the actual "FoodSaver" brand of vacuum sealer.  I've owned a FoodSaver (a Vac 1050) for about 8 years and it finally gave up the ghost this past fall.  We replaced it with a V2940 that we saw on super sale at Costco just before Christmas for $110.00.  As you said, the one touch/one try operation is great and I hope this one lasts as long as the last one.

The only thing I don't like about the new models is that the vacuum channel is so far away from the sealing bar.  On the other hand, the sealing bard is much wider on the new models and makes a much better seal.  I guess it all balances out in the long run.

Oh, one accessory that is worth the cost is the wide mouth jar sealer.  We've begun making our own sauces and being able to vacuum seal the batches is really handy.  It is also a great way to preserve batches of homemade rubs.  You can store them in your pantry in quart sized jars and they'll stay fresh for months.

Hey tim,

That Model 120 puts a nice edge on the knifes, I really like it too.  I have had a Foodsaver for about five years now, they work great.  Just be sure to give it about 20 seconds between sealings.  I fried the sealing strip on the older one by doing Ribeye back to back to back. Oh well, live and learn.

We're on our 4th Food Saver and we've never had an issue with them other than the sealing strip.

Even waiting the 20 seconds won't help much depending on how often and long you use them.  When we sent in our last one to the mfg we talked with a customer service rep that recommended using a frozen teething ring to cool down the strip.  You just rub it back and forth until it's cooler.  3 swipes and you're good to go.

By the way, if you fry the strip you can just send it to them and they'll replace it with a rebuild for about 1/3 of the cost of new.

Cool down, shmool down...I've used this on big Costco/Sam's Club/Smart & Final runs 'til smoke was pouring from the sealing strip.  And it was just fine, although it really makes funny noises from time to time  :D  Your mileage may vary!!
I have the VAC1075 FoodSaver, I bought it before I moved to AZ so it's at least six years old.
