My Dad and I belong to a men’s group at our church and these guys like to eat! So I offered to smoke brisket for the group. My converted brinkman was not up to this large task (100 + men regular) so back to the drawing board we went. A friend who is a cattle feed mfg offered an endless supply of Vitamin E drums. Since they held edible non toxic product, we took two. Originally this was just one UDS on its side that would later become this behemoth. 1st we sealed the two drums at the open end. 2nd we made its stand out of recycled cooler angle iron (my dad’s and a/c contractor). 3rd We cut two doors and welded hinges plus exhaust pipe. 4th We recycled two refrigeration recovery tanks that were perfect for hot boxes. I have found a much more controllable heat and smoke from propane so that was an easy decision. The hinges, burners, split regulator, weld supplies all came from H depot. The handles feature non heat conducting springs which were donated from two welding hammers wrapped around bent 90* rebar. The hot boxes are cut thru the side with a simple hinge made from bent rebar.  The grate is from Glendale steel and I seriously estimate it to be ¼” thick! Sure to not warp any time soon. The thermoms are from walmart. At the end of the day, the dinner (and I) received a standing ovation. I had an awesome time working on this project with my dad and I give all the glory to God. I had no problem ordering the 98lbs (8 of them) of brisket from the local walmart butcher. We’re real excited and proud of this new creation and are open to name suggestions!

Are you local? Is there a way to pry some of those drums? I've been told that my motto should be, "If it's free, it's for me!"
Next you can build that thing into the "Big Baby" smoker. Just google that phrase, and you'll find the plans. I think it uses one more drum offset lower and behind, along with a couple of attaching rings as a burn box...

For cooking, lower and slower. For spices, mo' hotter, mo' better. Habaneros rule!

Yea were in peoria and are midly interested in building a few of diff sizes and features for selling on craigslist and such. P.S the big baby is awesome too mite build it and try to sell it. As for the smoker goes, I've been able to get it over and hold  350*. Thanks for the comments and support!
