Title: My New Pit
Post by: Trailhound on April 04, 2010, 11:54:25 am
Check out the new pit my son and I built.
With the construction industry being slow as it is the company I work for has a few old tool boxes setting around the yard.
So why not use one as a BBQ pit.
It measure 5 feet wide 4 foot tall and 30 inches deep.
There is 22 square feet of cooking surface inside between two shelves.
It has a 2 cubic foot fire box that can move the full length of the pit to place the fire any place it is needed.
It has a complete frame inside of it so if needed I can insulate and put another wall inside.

That's about the best looking gang box I've seen. Let us know how it cooks.

that thing is cool, we had 3 butts, 2 chickens, 6 racks of spares and a brisket in it the other day.   the sucker eats a lot of wood though.

Eats a lot of fuel 'cause it's just thin gauge steel and it bleeds thru the sides. I'd definitly try and insulate it with another sheet of steel on the inside of course. Use mineral wool (rock wool) when insulating it as it allows higher protectiuon against the heat than std fiberglass.

Make friends with a tin bender and insulate it with mineral wool and cover that with the sheet metal on the inside. That would made a good smoker great. ;D ;D
Like I said before, it's the best lookin' gang box I've seen.

Well I have only cooked in it two times now and it did an awesome job both times. I have never cooked in one this big so boy is there a lot to learn about temp control; rate at which the fire burns wood, air flow and the list goes on and on. Yes it is only 16 gauge but you know I put a blanket on it what a different that made. I will more then likely insulate and put an interior wall in it one of these days. But first I have to finish the wife’s master bathroom and the outdoors kitchen and outdoor dining area well you get the point. I need to increase the water pans to cover more of the cooking area. There are few little things I have found I need to do to it but nothing too big. All part of the learning curve I guess.

Thanks for all the replies.

Timm, what you can do is grab another gang box, guessing Vegas will be slow for awhile, and build a second one with all your mods. That way you won't have any down cooking time or interrupt your learning curve. Although I guess your learning curve won't be too long. Take care and keep posting. ;D ;D ;D

Or, as Groucho Marx was known to ask, "Are you married, or happy?"
Now we know why I'm looking over my shoulder...

Truth be told, any man that gives his wife a sword cane has plenty of confidence. ;)

I went past a junkyard on S 51st Ave. yesterday that had 2 of those toolboxes. And a big old safe lookin' thing made of heavy steel, with heavy duty latches. I don't even know what it was.  The lot also sold wood, although the proprietor said all they had was mesquite. He said he knows Thomas @ BBFW...
You know who I mean Thomas?

Hmmm I wonder what you call it when you get her a pistol?  Am I in trouble now?  Should I be looking over my shoulder?

wow just saw this i was planning on building one from the ground up roughly this size mine is going to be 5feet tall 5fett wide and 30inches deep with the fire box area double insulated with rockwool I was planning on having racks every 4-5 inches. its just going to cost a fortune to build but at least i can do everything myself.
