Title: BBQ Smokers
Post by: billybuss on July 01, 2008, 02:21:52 pm
Hello,
Does anyone have experience in using the Traeger pellet smoker and/or the Smokette SM008 electric smoker oven?  I currently have two offset smokers and was investigating these models.

I do not have a Pellet Pooper, but have seen them in action.  They look like they can product some tasty Q and they allow for sleep at the comps.  The issue I have seen on the standard Treagers, the metal is fairly thin, so it will be affected by the outside temps.  That and the standard temp guage is not that consistant.  They do have an electric gauge to fix that issue.  You do need electric.

The FEC look more solid, but again I don't own one.

Are you planning to compete or is the a home based purchase.

Ken with Gourmet Grills is the local Treager Dealer here in town and is very knowledgable about these units.

Check out his web site http://www.aztraegergrills.com/contact.html and contact him if you have any questions.  I will send him a request to check out this topic as well.  ;)

Thanks for the info.  I am not familiar with FEC, what's the full name?

The reason I was checking on new BBQ's is that I purchased some mesquite wood that made my que too strong of a flavor. I was looking at the pellets that would be more consistant in flavor.

I would like to compete but don't have any competion experience and all the necessary gear to be competitive. I played professional golf for over 10 years and understand the need to be fully prepared to compete properly. I have been grilling for over 30 years and have been making barbeque almost every weekend for almost two years. I need to get out to a few events and learn the ropes.

Sorry about that.  The cooker is made by Cookshack and is a Fast Eddie or FEC.  It is one of thier competition models.  Here is a link to check them out. http://store.cookshack.com/c-78-fast-eddys-by-cookshack-smokers.aspx

There are a lot of Comps coming up in the area, beginning in August up north in Payson and Taylor, then down in the valley in October and November.  Come by and check them out.

Welcome to the madness and just be prepared, it rolls out of control quickly.  Next thing you know, you will have six cooking units on your patio and will be looking for more.  Of course you won't feel too bad, as some around here have 20 or so.  Right Jay???  ;D

Mesquite is especially way too strong if not burned properly during the cooking process, but any wood is if not burned properly. Without jumping into the whole pellet thing, why not try some pecan or/and apple wood. Pretty mellow.

Only 19 cookers Dave....but I'm not addicted. >:D

Another thing worth noting is take a trip to Berry Bros and talk to Thomas about the different smoking woods.  Mention this site and he will take care of you.  Great resource to have available.

Only 19 Jay, so what are you looking to add???   ;D

I have the Traeget Texas. I used for years the electric water smoker you get at wal-mart and was up every hour all night long adding chips. Now I sleep the night thru with my temp alarm at my bedside to let me know if the smoker gets to hot or to cool. In the morning I insert the meat probes, sit in the recliner drinking beer and leaning forward to admier the smoke and see the temp.
