Seeing as I just got back from the docs today. I found that not only am I overweight, I have high blood pressure. So doc said cut the salts and lose some weight. So I am asking if anyone may have any low/no salt recipes for a flavorfull rub?

I'd suggest MS. Dash and brown sugar combo ground fine.

Since they often recommend lemon juice instead of salt for low salt diets, you might want to try Countrytime lemonade mix in a rub...unless it has some kind of hidden sodium in it.

For cooking, lower and slower. For spices, mo' hotter, mo' better. Habaneros rule!

Was in a similar situation last year, got on a plan, took off a bunch of weight, BP much lower, can now enjoy the salt and sugar.  My recommendation would be to see what  you can do to around the weight, seemed to be the biggest help for me.  Outside that, what CRASH said w/o the brown sugar (that'll keep the weight on) :)

It's not just the rubs, as you know.  Sodium is in everything we eat these days.  To lower your Blood Pressure these things would help:

Drink less...although I think you mentioned once that you don't drink at all?

Drink tea - Grapefruit juice - Lower BP

Eat more fish - Omega 3 fats help lower BP

I eat a good fiber cereal every morning and add ground Flax Seed + Bananas or berries  -  Potassium lowers BP

Get more calcium in your diet  -  Calcium lowers BP

Olive or Sesame Seed oil instead of corn or vegetable oil -  this can lower you BP by as much as 30 points alone!

Weight loss and exercise is the real key.  Eating right is the first step, but your body has to move.  A sedentary lifestyle gives you almost no chance of beating this.

I've been kicking around an idea for a BBQ diet (more like an exercise routine).

During every hour of cooking, I try to go walk a mile.

It's more of a gimmick to get me moving, but I am trying to work towards those 10,000 steps a day. I would think exercise would work better than any change in recipes.

Salt is a biggie!!  My wife has an inner ear thing that is caused by water retention called Meniers Disease, same diet applies almost no salt.  Dizzy Pig guys back east have some no salt rubs that he let me try when he came to Havasu last year for a cook in a friends yard.  good stuff....!

Watch out for canned food especially!  You can find stuff with no or low salt as we found out, it just takes some reading.

But don't worry dude, there is some good stuff out thier to help ya!!

good luck...

ROBIN, tell me where to mail it to and i'll send you some of our low sodium rub to try! We made up for the lack of salt with other spices and it's always been popular with our family, friends, customers !!! Also can you handle MSG .We use MSG in some of our rubs, but not our basic rub!!

For all of you newbies out there, chefROB just showed you what a good basic rub is made of!! Take his recipe and play with it and make it your own!! One small hint- leave the salt until the last and adjust the percentages until it makes you do the happy dance!!!

My wife is real salt sensitive, I tend to use a base of Mrs. Dash products that are actually well made. If I can do some bbq esp for her i'll make it seperate. Cause a happy wife is a happy house. Plus, my wife is the bees kness, so she gets what she wants!
