Title: Out of the Ashes BBQ Comp - Springerville, AZ
Post by: Mike (AZBarbeque) on July 02, 2012, 04:09:03 pm
Hey all, we finally locked down this great event.

Springerville/Eagar, Arizona suffered the worst Forest Fire in Arizona History last year.  They are working very hard to recover from this tragic event and are hoping that this event will take a big step in helping the recovery.

This part of the state is about 30 degrees cooler than here in the valley and it is just beautiful up there.

We are combining this great BBQ comp with their annual ATV Jamboree up there and this event has been one of their biggest for years.  They get over 400 ATVer that come up and enjoy the entire week up there.  This year, the ATV jamboree is FREE, so they are hoping for even bigger crowds.

The Entry Fee for this event is just $75 until August 1st, after that, it's just $100.  We are keeping the entry fee low with the hopes that many of you will bring up and cook extra food for the people's choice.  Everyone dry camps out there, so there will be over 400 people looking for food the day of this event.

Get your registrations in today and come enjoy a great event up in the cool pines and help the area with their recovery from last year's tragic event.

Here is an e-mail I received from one of our members, Mike Nuttall who is the Police Chief up in Springville.  He is the leading force behind getting this event up and going and he competes out on the BBQ Circuit here in Arizona under the name 145 Grill.

_______________________________________________

My Name is Mike Nuttall I am the Chief of Police for the Town of Springerville and also a member of the AZ Barbeque.  I have competed in a couple of contest and while competing found out that this organization is comprised of some friendly and helpful people. Once I entered my first contest I was hooked.  I want to personally invite all existing teams and new teams to our event and experience all our area has to offer.  In 2011 I entered my first event in Safford, when I returned from that event my fire pager went off reporting a fire in the Wallow Wilderness area.  Well as we all know the rest is history, that small fire turned into the largest fire in Arizona history burning over a half million acres.   We have risen "out of the ashes" and want to show off our area and let everyone know that we still have a beautiful forest.   So if you want to experience the cool weather bring your ATV and enjoy the trail rides offered by the Outlaw ATV Jamboree Organization. So come up and attend out competition and let us show you a good time. This is our first year and we would love to continuing hosting an event each year, so come on up and support our cause and enjoy all we have to offer.  By the way I will also be competing and my team is "145 Grill" come by and say hello.

Thanks:

Mike Nuttall

Thanks Michael, The charities that will benifit from this event is the Little Colorado Lodge 74 fraternal order of Police and Special Olympics. We were unable to do our fundraising last year and I knew I could count on the BBQ community to help us out.  I have found out what a great bunch of people everyone is and I am proud to be associated somewhat with everyone. I will be posting a website tomorrow as soon as it is finished. It will have the registration form and other information as we get it. We are working on getting reduced room rates at our motels for BCS participating teams. I know this isn't the biggest event but we can promise to show you a good time and cool weather. The Outlaw Jamboree will also be having events that people can enter such as trailrides and several events in the arena including mudbogs. So I hope to see some old friends and meet some new friends at this event.

I just confirmed that the Rode INN and the El JO motel will be taking reservations and will be our host motels. They will be giving reduced rates use the code: "out of ashes bbq" to get the reduced rate.  There numbers are Rode Inn 928  333-4365 and El Jo 928  333-4314, the manager still needs to advise her people of the rates so give it a day or so, she was out of town. The rates include a deluxe continental breakfast. There web site is www.rodeinnmotels.com  Thanks again everyone.

It'd be great to see 30+ teams do this event, this area went through heII with the fires and deserve a break and the fun that this event will bring. Everyone here in the valley has been roasting in the heat with much more to come so y'all deserve a break as well! Head to cooler climes, bring the ATV's and family and make a little vacation out of it.

We did go through Hell during the fires, and we would love to show everyone what we have to offer.  Again this isn't the biggest prize money, but we are doing what we can with what we have. If anyone needs anymore info. on the contest or the area please contact me, I would like to hear from ya.

It may not be "the biggest prize money" and the huge upside to that is you don't have all the bull or entry costs that go along with the big money comps. I'll say it again, this is a great way for 1st,2nd,3rd timers or someone who's even thinking about it to do a comp in front of judges with low cost/low pressure/low temp.
I'd guess you could say that it's a "low and slow" event. ;)

OK, I am about 90% sure I will make it there, with or without any team members.  I do hope to get located next to someone who will share their electricity.

I will get my entry out as soon as I figure out which team name I will be using..........2 Sons or Devil / Cats.

Were in. Can someone tell me  where the comp will be held. The rules for BCS look pretty close to KCBS so since this is my first BCS, looks like turn in 45min apart is the big difference. ?? I did read the BCS rule I'm just trying to make sure there are no surprises??

John np real suprises, the only other thing is the garnish. Under BCS rules, garnish is optional and is defined as leafy, edible, vegetable garnish. Score are from 1 Disqualified to 10 Outstanding.

Southeast is camping for ATV Jamboree, we are on the Northwest, in a large parking lot. blue building and arena seperates jamboree and cookoff.

We are definitely going to do another Appetizer Party.  At the Tucson Freedom RV event, we did it at 8 pm.  I think we can do it out at this one at like 9 or 10 pm.  Once I know the schedule of the ATV Jamboree, I will post up more on this.

Can't wait to enjoy all the great food creations everyone makes for this.  Always a tasty & fun part of the event.

The FEE is waived for all the BBQ Competitors, you just need to fill out the form.

ONCE AGAIN, IT IS FREE TO DO PC A THIS EVENT..

We are hoping all the teams will do some sort of PC as that is how the charity is making their money from this event.

Thanks...

We are starting to promote this in the area. I am trying to get some meat donated, I will let everyone know if I am successful or not.  We will be getting in touch with the media in the area in the next couple of days and we will be posting flyers in the area and surrounding towns.

I'm not sure the fifty dollars for the health dept is worth doing PC or not. I will have to do alot of PC to make up the difference. Is there going to be alot of vendors??? If so that's all good for me, but it might help make  my mind up on PC or not. Either way I'm there. Just need to decide on PC or not. HELP

Ok folks I made a mistake on the peoples choice application, don't worry it is still free, but they need more info. If you could make a diagram of your site along with how you plan on keeping stuff hot and or cold.  they want to know how you are going to keep things sanitized and whether you are using a canopy or not with size. They also want to know what you are going to do with your waste water. For those of you who have already submitted, I need this to add to your application. I know more hoops but they are honestly working with us, this is there first event also. I will take care of the diagram of the site area, I have explained to them that alot of people dont know what it looks like. If you use sides on your canopy let them know, if you use gloves what kind. if you use three sink system, explain. This is just a kink we can get through, so don't be too discouraged.

so in a nut shell diagram your site, state whether or not you are using a canopy or a trailer, how you are going to keep foods at temp. hot or cold, how you plan on disposing of waste water and trash, (we will have dumpsters) type of gloves and that you are doing this for a non profit.  So mail this out to me and I will get it to them, thay also advised me that I could fax it to them but I had to follow up with the originals. So thanks everyone who is going to do the peoples choice and to everyone else who is competing. Can't wait to meet everyone.

Thanks Mike, as a first year event, it's a learning experience for your local Health Department.

Thinking about this event. Any work on Elec. yet.

Jerry, go buy the largest marine battery at Walmart you can along with a 600 watt inverter and the days of worrying about electricity will be over.  I don't use much electricity other than a cfl light and the FEC and I always have a ton of juice left over after each comp.  Trust me, you do not want to rely upon comp power with the FEC.

If FEC's have sensitive electronics in 'em definitely don't rely on comp power unless you have a power conditioner or use it to trickle charge your marine battery. We've been concerned that we'd blow something at many events since many don't use generators or spider boxes that are designed for appliances, they're designed for power equipment like saws, compressors and drills and as such tend to put out dirty power not to mention the spikes and drops when somebody down the line fires up a high draw device or 5. That's why after the first couple of events we stayed on our generator as much as possible.

Mike,

2 Sons will not be doing PC, so just toss my health department application.  It is a combination of another hoop to jump through and being a small (1 or 2 person) team.

Thanks

How late could a team show up?  Mesquite is the week prior and my vacation time is pretty much spent.  I'm hoping to be able to compete in this one and hopefully get some fishing in on Sunday.

Just got today's mail and we are now up to 11 Team Entries for this event.

I still know of 5 more that said they are "In the Mail", so that puts us at 16.

Not too bad.  Hopefully we can get to 20 - 30 teams for this event.  It is shaping up to be a fun one for sure.

If you send in an application for people's choice remember you can't use latex gloves and make sure you put the right temps down. I heard from the health inspector today and they are really working with us, so don't let the application deter you in doing people's choice, there are only a couple of us doing it so far.  I am trying to get ribs donated, I will let everyone know when I know. Thanks again to everyone for the support and in making this a successful event.

Mike,

Do you have someone that could serve the extra meats from the teams that don't serve pc? Then the charity can keep all of the profit from the meat? Just a thought.

I would take the extra meat and sell it. I have a health permit and food handlers permits for this area.  So this would help us out. So I could do this for our charity instead of peoples choice and this would allow the other teams to do peoples choice if they still want to.

Thanks:
MIKE

I just found out that on Saturday there will be a gun show at the American Legion. So if you aren't cooking thats another event you can go see.  Hopefully most teams will stay until Sunday, there will be a fireworks show at the event site. The weather is very nice up here right now, cool days and evenings.  You might want to bring jackets for those cool evenings. If anyone needs anything don't hesitate to ask.

I talked with Mike Today and this event is really shaping up nicely.

The Trophies are all being hand made by one of his deputies with wood from last year's devastating fire, so they are all going to be unique and one of a kind.  You certainly want to win one of these.

We would love to get to 20 teams competing.  Right now, we have more kids Q entries than regular entries.

If you are on the fence, let's get you signed up.  It's just $100 and the prize fund is at $4000.  It's really supporting this community after last year's fire and it would be great to see lots of support.

Hope to see some more of you out there.

I want to know if teams are going to get there meat in town here or bring it with them, If you are getting it here I will meet with the stores in the area and make sure we have the meat available.  We have a Safeway and a Basha's in town.  I will also talk to them about having the garnish in stock.  Remember we live in the mountains and don't always have everything available when needed so we have to make plans.  Let me know so I can know whether to meet with them or not.

Thanks everyone for your support of this event.

I heard the same,we just got a new puppy from people who live right in the town of Springerville  and not a word about this or any info anywhere, they knew nothing about this and they live there and work at bussinesses there. We let them know we are coming up so they can see how the puppy we got is doing and we told them to spread the word, but surely someone should be doing some advertising, otherwise few people will be there  :(

I've messaged Mike to view this post and comment.  Hopefully he does today.

Let me ask all of you for some help with this as well.

Facebook changed their policies and now only about 10% of your friends list ever sees your posts.

With this is mind, the more people we get to help promote this event on Facebook, the better.

If you could, please visit https://www.facebook.com/events/386134628110620/ which is the event page for this competition and Share this event on your Facebook and or Twitter Profiles.  The more times we share it, the more people that view it.

We would love to pick up another 5 - 10 teams as well as some more public.

Thanks in advance for your help.

That's a terrific breakout for that many teams, Mike! Good odds for many teams to win. The BCS sure knows how to put on a fun event in great locations. And congrats to BBQ Island for donating so many great prizes for the kids. A wonderful introduction to the world of BBQ that may become a lifelong love of feeding friends and family. ;D

Thanks Mark, I agree.  The payouts are pretty good and with just 17 teams signed up as of now, everyone should walk with some good money.

The odds are good for teams, get those registrations in ASAP!!

Yes, Major Woody's has indicated that they are coming as well.

Nothing like a good Party with some great BBQ Friends up in the cool pines.

It is going to be a fun time.

So, with this in mind, Post up what you will be bringing to the Appetizer Party...  http://www.azbarbeque.com/forums/out-of-the-ashes-bbq-comp/friday-night-appetizer-party/

I just heard from Dan (Crazy Pig), he is also in.  So, if Major Woody's is in and Crazy Pig is in, that would put us at 19 Teams.

That's pretty good.

We are still hoping for a few more teams last minute. 25 would be a good number.

We just have this event and the one in Coolidge in November left, so the TOY's are still open for anyone, but you have to compete to be eligible.

Hope to see a few more teams coming to this event.

We will be there. Great cause and fantastic weather. Sounds like it's shaping up to be a great comp. I'd like to see a few more teams to get past 20, so if you are sitting on the fence like us, just pull the trigger! Perfect comp for first timers too....low key, low pressue and fun. There are a ton of us willing to help beginners from start to end, so let's go....

Awesome to hear you and the family are coming Dan.  It is a great event, supporting a great cause and some great communities.

Mike is the Police Chief up there in Springerville and has really gotten the community together for this great event.  He has been a great supporter of the club and BBQ throughout the state and it would be great to see lots of our club members support him and this event.

Even if you don't want to compete, come on up and judge or come up and just enjoy the event and get out of the heat for a few days.

There is an ATV Jamboree going on, so come on out and see some of the great ATVs that will be there and all the sponsors they will have set up out there displaying some great items.

Hope to see lots of you supporting this event.

You are aware that we did not build that to be mobile, right? Man, that's nuts. Anyway, we are not sure what time we will be heading up there. It's pretty much whatever work ends and the trailer is loaded. If I'm there of course I will help you load and unload your gear.

On a side note I'm thinking possibly a side bet...UA South (Tsn) vs. UA North (Tempe). Maybe we can come up with the formula to try and average out certain teams that want to participate. Since UA owns ASU in both sports and academics , I thought we can make a triple crown for bragging rights. Any ideas? More braggings rights than monetary compensation.

Bring it. You can do it like the border battle. Match up each team head to head and the side with the most points wins the battle. The prize can be money or the bottle bet.

I know she wasn't meant to be mobile.  But I just can't resist bringing her along.  She is just so pretty and she now has two grates.  I just have to show her off.   Besides, I can't cook everything on one Excel 20.

I dunno, Dan, the valley of the smog is loaded with teams............well, at least one --- Little Miss.  The others?  Whatever.  But if the smoggers beat the sunners?  Well, we have them beat in academics and athletics, so they would be going for one out of three.  Which means that we still would have 2 of 3 andstill bragging rights.  But I do expect, with you and Tracey, we would end up with 3 of 3.

Edit:  Oops, I forgot that Hog Pit will also be there, so that increases our odds even more.

Everyone who does an Appetizer chips in $1 for each Appetizer.

North Nogalas vs. Arizona...  >:D  >:D

Top 3 Appetizers for each region will be counted, the 3 with the most votes, wins.

Let me go on record by saying that the north teams are great people and I really believe they are some of the best at BBQ. But with that I do believe that the folks from down south are coming in with guns and smokers loaded to become the best that the state has and believe that we will come out on top. Just didn't want to get you guys to hate me for saying something wrong. I say let the games begin and may the best teams win. Lets have some fun and bring the best BBQ this state has ever seen with us.

No sir - you can't be the official spokesman for Southern AZ BBQ teams and not be included! There are some great cooks down south that I highly respect - this challenge could go either way. I think Mark and can come up with a team vs. team challenge that will be fair for both sides.

Nothing like seeing devils smack down wildcats, if not in football or basketball let it be BBQ. Unfortunately I'm working the weekend of the event and can't make it. I'm sure as an  in-partial BBQ judge of high moral and ethical standards when judging north would win.

Mike bring the banner we used at Golden Acorn maybe they can use it over the judges tent or something.

Everyone have a great time.

LOL, you give me too much credit.  Nancy & Jim do all the stuff with the scoring and I have no idea what their college affiliation is.

You know that all the scoring is done with Integrity.  After all, we are trying to expand nationwide with the BCS.  Already have a few comps outside Arizona we are talking with.  You never know where we might wind up next.

Hey, thanks for the kind words.  But it looks like, after stirring things up here, I'm gonna drop out of this comp.  I have decided I am too old for all the work it takes to do a comp solo.  Not just at the comp, but all the prep work, getting things ready, loading everything up (before and after), unloading everything (at comp and at home), etc.  Not to mention having to work our of the back of a pickup truck.  I had signed up hoping Matt would be able to make it, but he has too many things going on in his life.  So, 2 Sons is being put to rest.

145 Grill, I don't know if you can let another team use my registration, but if you can, go ahead.

On the bright side, I have some things for sale:
canopy
folding table with leg extensions
3 buckets for wash station
small and large disposable cutting boards
Nitrile gloves -- large
other stuff, would have to inventory.

Hey, thanks everyone.  I  probably won't decide for sure until we get back from Sedona on 9/5.  Will see how I feel then.  I really would like to continue competing (even though I don't seem to be showing any improvement :'( ).  It's just that yeasterday I was doing some work around the house, not even real physical work, and I got just dead tired :-[.  So started wondering if I should do solo comps.  I need one of those plush motor homes like some of you have. :D

Dan, thanks for the offer of helping load up.  I will let you know.  If I do, I guess it will be the evening of the 6th.  I will even get something other than Coors Light for you, if you want.

I do intend to try to judge.  It's just that I am not certified and there don't seem to be any classes before comps.

Thanks again, guys.

Mike, I hope you do decide to come to this event.  As everyone stated, I'm sure you won't have any problem getting help setting up and tearing down.

As for Judging, when you are ready, let me know and we will plan another class.  We will definitely do another one before the Havasu comp next year.

Have fun in Sedona.

I am fine with 145 Grill going against Mike P. Since 145 Grill will be cooking for our side, we can have Cowboy way cook for you southerners against Swimmin in Smoke.

Be more than happy to cook for the North side or should I say winning side.

Mike if you wish to become a CBJ I believe a KCBS judging class has been scheduled at Havasu comp in January.  I went to it last year and stayed at the Lake Havasu London Bridge Resort for $99/night, very nice room indoor jacuzzi on the river and only a 10 minute walk to the competition area.

Any updates as to the weather up there lately?  Any sports bars nearby that carry the Pac-12 network?  What color powerbait are the browns biting on?

So, being the Chief, does that mean that he could see to it that Major Woodys be "detained" at some point for questioning about the murder of (insert animal here) like at around Midnight? ??? Hmmmmm, one competitor out of the way..... ;) :D :D :D :D

The weather up here is fantastic, it was in the 70's during the day and 50's at night.  It was cloudy but no rain. Hopefully we will have the same next weekend.

I will have my officers detain any team you want if you are willing to pay the bail.  Everyone have a safe drive up the mountain.

I am going to the site tomorrow to see where water is located.  Contact me if you are coming on Thursday evening so I can meet you at site and show you where to set up. Cell number is 928 245-0145.  We will have an area for booths and another to park cars.  Looked at the trophies today and they are awesome, my detective is a talented woodworker. I think everyone will be pleased with them. If you need meat here, it will be hard to get briskets in town, nearest location to get them is walmart in showlow. You should be able to get the other meats. Garnish was ordered at both Safeway and Basha's. If there is anything else that anyone needs to know about please contact me on here or call me on my cell. I would encourage everyone to take a little time to go see the forest, I can recommend several areas to go see. Everyone drive safe.

You can ride them from your spot, we require a licensed driver. If it is street legal you can drive anywhere.  Make sure you go on some of the side roads in the forest, we also have atv trails.

found a water faucet on site, we got the okay to use it.  Bring 5 gallon bottles or a long hose in order to use it.  I also found a one more hidden power outlet, Power is in short supple so if you can get by with a generator or battery power I would rely on that. I am supplying a large portable generator and light tower that we can use for power. If we have enough cords  we can get you power.  This is one of the glitches we anticipated for a 1st yr event. Don't forget your atv in order to participate on the trail rides, there is also some events in the arena with the atv's on Saturday and fireworks Saturday night at the event. There will be local and ATV vendors on site close to our area. Drive Safe everyone.

I know this isn't the place for items for sale but I have and can bring to Springerville if anyone is interested. A wash station I made and no longer used. I used it in 2 comps and with the new trailer won't need it. If interested and want me to bring it let me know. First $25.00 gets it. Water jug, bus pan and bucket not included.

When you get here, you will understand.

We are an "Add On" to the big ATV Jamboree going on up here.  They have a pretty impressive set up.

Huge 18 Wheelers for Ride Now and Discount Tire and lots of vendor booths for the ATV community.  They have all been here since Tuesday, so they are all set up in their normal spots.  Then we need to leave room for all the ATV's to park while visiting these booths and setups.

So, there you have it.

It is a great setup though and I think it would be great to see us grow for many years with this event.

Now, pack up a few more extension cords and get up here.   ;D

Watch out for the Speed Trap the local Police (Mike) have set up.  They know how us BBQers like to speed.  ;D
