Hello all:
I am really interested in cooking some great BBQ. I went to my first event this last weekend, I not only went to observe but I also entered, what a great bunch of people. I learned alot at the event and hope to participate in more. I am the Police Chief of Springerville and cooking of any kind is a stress reliever. I was warned that I would catch the BBQ bug at the event and it is true I caught it and can't wait until I can compete again and hopefully do a lot better. I had such a good time and was relieved that the other contestants were helpful and friendly. I should be able to learn from the best.
Thanks:

Welcome Mike! Let me tell everyone here that this guy and his family are top notch, and a great comp neighbor. When a big wind started to pick up our canopy and turn over our gear during turn-ins, his whole family ran over and helped out. Glad you found us here, you just can't beat the company. The ribs you gave me were great, but we talked about the flavor profile. It had an outstanding chipolte rub (my personal preference any day), but it's all about the judges. You've got a great homemade trailer rig. Hope to see more of your team soon, i'll give you buzz if my hunt draw works out! Great meeting you!

Mike,
Having visited the forests of Eastern Arizona for over 20 years and seeing the enormity of the wallow fire, my thoughts are with all of my friends in Alpine and surrounding area. I know with the evacuations going on you are probably pretty busy right now in Springerville. Stay safe my friend!

Welcome Mike. My dad was born in Nutrioso, and we still have some friends who summer there from way back when. Eagar is my grandmothers maiden name, and her line that settled the Eagar valley. A lot of family history there, so prayers being offered they get a handle on this fire real soon. Very sad to see it happening.

Just a quick note to thank everyone for the support we need it. We just put Greer under a pre evacuation notice, I have meetings this morning to see what we are going to do with Springerville and Eagar area. If we are evacuated it will be because of smoke not fire. The fire is past Big Lake, it has burned the fire tower at Big Lake and headed North East towards Greer and Eagar. For people who have family up here everyone is safe. There has been no injuries or property loss. I will try to keep everyone informed, I love the smell of smoke but not this kind. Take care everyone and pray for rain.

quick update on fire, All homes in Alpine safe so far, we have only lost 4 guest cabins in Beaverhead, 1 small storage buildingin Alpine and a utility trailer. Greer residents still at home, no evacuation yet. Springerville and Eagar pre planning for a possible evacuation. If you want any specific info leave me a message and I will try to answer, I also have a facebook page I am updating. Thanks for the support.

Hang in there Mike.

Thanks Dan once I get everything organized thinks should slow down and my support staff can become more involved. I have been going from briefing to briefing. The good news is the wind has slowed and so has the fire. They were able to do some effective back burns last night so hopefully our area will be safe. Lots of smoke in town and alot of anxious people.

Well everyone busy week. An update on the fire is that there have been 22 homes lost 24 buildings damaged, this includes Greer, Alpine, and Nutrioso. Thankfully we have no damaged or burned homes in Springerville or Eagar. Looks like the people might be able to return on Saturday morning if the wind cooperates. I want to thank everyone for the support and patience.

Mike,
After the Rodeo/Chedeski fire the middle school my kids went to participated in an effort to sow wild flower seeds on a hillside in an area that had been burned pretty badly. It wasn't much but it gave everyone involved a first hand look at the devastation and a feeling that there is something even young ones can do to help out. The area we worked in is visible from 260 and to this day when we drive by we take a look over to see how our hill is doing.
We live in Phoenix and there has only been a few summers in the last 21 that we haven't gone to Alpine for at least a long weekend. We have spent many hours exploring the forest roads in the triangle formed by Big Lake, Hannagan Meadow and Alpine, with one of our favorite places being the East fork north of Buffalo Crossing. My heart sinks when I see that this is ground zero for this conflagration and it is going to take a while for recovery.
I know there are a lot of people on this forum that will offer up any assistance you may need. Keep us posted and let us know how we can help.

I saw you joined the site, I am so happy to have someone else on the mountain interested in bbq. I went to my first competition in Safford and the fire started the next day I got home. Not only did I go to observe, I also entered, I can't wait to do it again. These are a great bunch of people and if I wasn't hosting a bbq this weekend I would probably be in Holbrook competing. Once you go to a competition get ready to get hooked. I am also trying to get a competition in this area, I have been speaking with the association and then the fire started, I will get a hold of them again, we need all the events we can get in this area due to the fire. Well keep in touch.

MIKE, if you get a comp going, give me a call and i might be able to tell you some of the pitfalls that i have observed over the last few years!
