Hi there!

I am planning on entering my first BBQ competition for the Out of the Ashes BBQ. My dad is extremely good at cooking BBQ and is working on passing his great skills to me. I have not been doing it my whole life but I think just watching him do it while growing up has made it a lot easier for me to learn. His specialty is smoking brisket and I wish so badly that he could be here for this competition. He will be visiting from Oklahoma for Labor Day weekend but will not be here during the competition :( He will be bringing me some hickory wood and I'm hoping to get a few pointers from him while he's here, haha. I am so excited to meet everybody else who will be competing!

Welcome Sara, great to have you on here.  Hope you enjoy the site and all it has to offer.

We have lots of great BBQ topics & BBQ Enthusiasts on here and everyone is always willing to help out as needed.

Hope to see you out at the event competing, it will be great to have another local team in the event.

Let us know if you have any questions.  Glad your Dad got you into it.  Hopefully he can make it back out to another one of our events in the near future.

The hardest thing about smoking meat is keeping it lit.

Thanks for the welcome! I think I may have to skip out on this year since I won't be able to make the meat inspection because of work but I would love to come by after work that day to watch everybody set up and also watch everybody cook on Saturday, just to see what I'm getting into for next year. I've never competed in a BBQ competition before and would like to know exactly what to expect so I can prepare properly :)

Sara, the meat inspection is done all day long.  We have some teams that won't show up until 10 or 11 pm Friday.  Please don't let that sway your decision.  We would love to have you out there.

Hey Sara,

The best thing you can do is jump in. Nobody is ever preparded for their first competition. This is a great group of people, that are all willing to help. So jump in and come see Cheri, she will show you how to build your boxes.
