My name is Tom and I live in Indio Ca. and have recently joined here as well as the CBBQA.  I have heard nothing but good things about the members of AZBarbeque and your friendly competitions.  I am considering trying to do some comps in 2010 as T&J's Backyard BBQ.  I do mean backyard as I have ZERO experience with competitions.  I was looking at the event scheduled for Lake Havasu and was curious if this might be to much for a GREEN GREEN NEWBIE ROOKIE.

I enjoy reading your post and look forward to becoming a part of your community.

Glad you joined the forum, Tom. Tom from Indio...sounds strangely familiar...Don't wait for the "right" type of comp. Just do it. Come in last, then you can improve! There are a couple of checklists for things to bring to comps, and lots of pics of boxes. And take pics of your practice, and we'll critique them. Lots of great experience here.

For cooking, lower and slower. For spices, mo' hotter, mo' better. Habaneros rule!

Welcome! You just might find that this great, free forum is worth more than you might find at other "pay" sites. We have alot of fun here. Absolutely, Arizona is the place to be for a newbie competing. You won't feel and pressure, or be looked down upon as the new guy. There is a tremendous amount of incredibly cool people here. Enjoy the site, and jump in!

Hi Tom,
Welcome to the friendliest and most fun bbq site out there! Like everyone else has said, just jumping right in is the way to go. If you wait and wait for the perfect comp where you won't feel intimidated, you will never do it. What do you cook on? Are you a KCBS member? Are you familiar with the cuts of meat and what is required? That is one place to start. Make sure you understand the rules, etc....then just start practicing. We live in Havasu and are helping to promote our event in February. There will be some big rigs for sure, but there always are. There will also be some who cook out of the back of their pick-up or a mini-van. Seriously the size and expense of your smoker does not determine who has better BBQ!! ;D
Either go for it, get your entry fee in before 12/1 to get the early bird price and you have over 3 months to perfect your craft. If you don't think you are quite ready, there are always teams who can use an extra pair of hands. Some even on this site. Come over anyway and hang out visiting with the teams that you will meet here and on CBBQA. You will find the nicest folks and feel free to ask questions...some might be over the line (secrets) but mostly everyone is eager to share with the greenhorns.
If you like beer, BBQ and a serious lack of sleep then this sport is right up your alley
BTW, the Learning Channel is airing an 8 part series starting Dec. 3rd called BBQ Pitmaster and it follows several teams across the country doing comps. They were filming in Mesquite NV when we were there in September. Anyway, that will give you some insight to the world of comp bbq.
Have fun on here and PM me anytime you want to chat!

Thank you very much for the welcome, this really is a friendly site.  I am not a member of KCBS, guess I need to join that also.  I have a Tejas 2040cc and a Char Grille and a Santa Maria type grill that I sometimes take with me.  The smokers are set up in a utility trailer.  I am familiar with the meats and did some smoking and selling at the Blue Water RV Park for Special Events this summer but I know NOTHING about competitions.  I guess I will take everyones advice and just "jump in" at your Havasu event.  Look forward to meeting you all.

Question:  I have a motorhome so will I be able to stay in it at the cook site and do I need to rent extra space for it or do I need to reserve a spot somewhere.  Thanks again, Tom

Tom - It is recommended that you are a member of KCBS but it is NOT required to compete. I know from experience.  ;) Check out the registration form for the Havasu Comp. and it will tell you the size of the spaces. You can also purchase an extra space if you need it.
