Does anyone have a source for good, fresh, whole chicken? I'm looking for something more flavorful than the humongous, steroid pumped, bland chicken that is found in the grocery stores.

I wouldn't smoke them, but I recommend buying hens from Asian markets. You'll find them frozen. They are sometimes labeled as stewing hens since they are better simmered for a long time to make dishes like pot pies and Chicken & dumplings. It will taste more like the chicken many of us grew up on, rather than the 2-month old fryers we pick up at most supermarkets. The closest most people get to these days are the chicken bits in Campbell's soups which are diced from laying hens that have served their purpose.

Check out kosher or halal markets. Another choice is Rocky or Rosie brand chickens. I think Whole Foods sells them.
