Hey all, I have seen this asked a few times on here, so thought we would make an official topic.

What type of lump charcoal do you find works the best, is priced the best, has the best availability?

I typically use the Lump from Barbeque's Galore, but like was mentioned a few times on here, the pieces are not consistent and the entire bottom of the bag is just dust that you can't use.

What do you prefer??

I have a feeling the majority will say ranchers. The problem is where do you get it at I went to 3 places lowes,HD,and Ace to know avail. so if someone could point me in the right direction it would be appreciated. I have been using Royal Oak instead.

Rancher makes too much ash for my style of cookers, so I gave the last few bags I had to Vince.  He has about 35 bags stock piled.

I use royal Oak, as I can find it at Wally World, but I do try to stock up a little.  At $5.29 for ten lbs, it fits into the budget.   I will use about two or three bags at a comp for the all night burns.

I have been using mesquite charcoal for years.  I usally get the stuff from Safeway, as it is alway available.  Not only do I use it in my Lang smoker, but I use it to grill with.

I use RO, since that is what is available. Only other choices here are cowboy lump which burns way fast, bag is full of dust, small pieces, and produces HUGE amounts of ash...other words...it sucks.
Kingsford was great till they changed it up. The newer briquettes have more surface area now with those indents. So now it burns fast and produces alot more ash than the old Kingsford. I wish they would just change back. I am trying to talk some friends in all chipping in and ordering a pallet of wicked good.
I haven't tried wicked good but they have a good review on that charcoal comparison site (i'll see if I can find it), and it looks like my best bet is order bulk online of quality charcoal, unless someoneknows a great deal on great product in the valley or in Flagstaff.

Like most have said so far, availability and budget are also my driving factors. I use Royal Oak, and Cowboy lump. Both are affordable and are almost always in stock at the local sores. The cowboy burns a bit faster and I tend to get more larger pieces. The RO is decent enough. When I can I use wood, and prefer it, but again availability and cost. Later, gotta check temps. ;D

Perfect Q = Tender succulent meat with a savory rub, cooked low/slow with aromatic wood. Sauce is just another condiment.
