Was wondering what charcoal everyone prefers and why. I am new at smoking and BBQing and am just trying to increase knowledge.
Thanks
-
My smoker is a stick burner. I made and have used a chrcoal basket, but it just won't get up to temp. Average max temp with charcoal is 185 deg. For my kettle grill I use royal oak when it's available. If not, then I use cowboy cause that's all there is. I don't care for briquettes and since I dont have a bullet, there is no use for it. I did like rancher's choice when it was around for the 2 weeks home depot carried across the country. Yucca starch for a binder is ok in my book. I know kingsford has won a LOT of awards. I just don't dig on burning used tires and sulfur for something I am going to eat.

If you have some time, read the reviews at this site.

It mostly comes down to what you can find in your area.

I've had pretty decent results with the Stubbs brand. Lowe's seems to have a steady supply.
-
Comp Kingsford is the norm in my 22 WSM. It gives me the right temp and long burn times with little ash. The binder is babys breath and mothers milk. A great combination that binds the briketts together naturally with no added chemicals or silicants, the way nature intended.
-
Dean I do believe Jack and Ice make a better binder!?
-
Mother's milk turns sour at 195. I live for carcinogens.
-
I've heard that Dave burns a combination of Marlboro and Winston pellets in his FEC.
-
you got it right, the judges love that combo
-
You should try throwing some menthol in there too.
-
The Mint throws them off, just check the ris score from Boulder
-
Try putting a few of these in the hopper.

By the way, what category is "ris"?
-
Suppost to be Ribs, but it really did not matter. ;D
What is the burn times on those??
-
They last almost as long as these:

the Pop Drops will give that sweet finish I am looking for. Sweet with a little coco finish.
-
Now you know the secret to my special rib glaze.
The world is your oyster.
-
I assume you use the Cherry on the ribs and lime with the pork.
-
I use the lime with the coconut charcoal.
And we have now come back to the topic at hand.
-
I still have 5 boxes of the kamado Coconut Charcoal in the Garage. Pain to light, but cooks well.
-
Put the lime with the coconut and grill it all up!
-
Damn, that is the problem. I have the lime with the coconut and drink it all up.
-
Boy, You all didn't have sh*t to do last night, huh? :D
-
What do you mean?? I had lots to do. I consumed large quantities of beer and wine and got large post numbers. ;D
-
Put the lime with the coconut and grill it all up!
NILSSON ROCKED!!
Also appropriate Nilsson song...Jump Into the Fire.
sorry Dave. I had ta go there!
-
I stick with standard Kingsford, blue bag. It's consistent. I've seen the competition Kingsford. Anyone with thoughts on that?
-
Haven't tried it yet.....
-
The competition K is great... lights extremely fast, burns hot, creates far less ash. does create more smoke i think. y'all should look into it if it's in your price range.
-
KMart has RO briquettes 18# bags $6. Again, lots less ash than BlueK. But it has special ash doubling ingredients...
