Was wondering what charcoal everyone prefers and why. I am new at smoking and BBQing and am just trying to increase knowledge.
Thanks

My smoker is a stick burner. I made and have used a chrcoal basket, but it just won't get up to temp. Average max temp with charcoal is 185 deg. For my kettle grill I use royal oak when it's available. If not, then I use cowboy cause that's all there is. I don't care for briquettes and since I dont have a bullet, there is no use for it. I did like rancher's choice when it was around for the 2 weeks home depot carried across the country. Yucca starch for a binder is ok in my book. I know kingsford has won a LOT of awards. I just don't dig on burning used tires and sulfur for something I am going to eat.

If you have some time, read the reviews at this site.

It mostly comes down to what you can find in your area.

I've had pretty decent results with the Stubbs brand.  Lowe's seems to have a steady supply.

Comp Kingsford is the norm in my 22 WSM.  It gives me the right temp and long burn times with little ash. The binder is babys breath and mothers milk.  A great combination that binds the briketts together naturally with no added chemicals or silicants, the way nature intended.

You can't drink all day if you don't start early.

Mother's milk turns sour at 195.  I live for carcinogens.

I've heard that Dave burns a combination of Marlboro and Winston pellets in his FEC.
