One must be careful with sugar and beef.  That recipe looks good.  I tried a sugar crusted steak once about a year ago.  It was a definite no-go!

I've wanted to do, I believe it's called, a Caveman steak. You throw the meat directly onto hardwood coals. Anyone ever try this?

I heard of rubbing mud on your steak forming a thick crust and throwin that on the coals.  Once the steak is done, knock the mud off (at this time, it would be a hard crust) and you're good to go!  Got all that info from a retired marine who said that they did that during training.  I haven't tried that one tho.
