Title: UDS repaint advice needed
Post by: AZWildcat on September 16, 2011, 06:16:04 pm
Has anyone stripped their UDS to repaint it? Any advice or tips on getting the old paint off, other than just sanding?

I looked up sandblasting; found a place that did mine for $20...outside only. I think you can get 'em powder coated for under $50.

Hey Dave, do you think powder coating will take the heat? Have you done that on any smokers? The reason I'm asking is I have a large smoker some of my students made, and I want to powder coat it. I've use engine paint but not real happy with it.

I spoke with a powder coater today, he said it'll start to melt at 400 degrees, but under that you are fine. Now that's surface temp, not air temp. I don't think that my surface temps will get above that, unless I have a decent chicken fire! I'm tearing my UDS's down and getting them to him ASAP.

I have had a bunch of parts powder coated on projects by a guy in Maricopa, IMFLYIN, with great results. He even did the headers for my aircraft but used a ceramic coating which is said to resist up to 1400F. You might ask your powder coater if he can ceramic coat. I have crylon on my UDS and still looks great plus is easy to touch up when needed.

This looks absolutely perfect. All these tinny details are made with lot of background knowledge. I like it a lot. This was a useful post and I think it is rather easy to see from the other comments as well that this post is well written and useful.
