Decided to build a cold smoke generator for cold smoking and to provide and regulate the smoke in my BUFORD cooks.
Naming it the "Smoke-Pak".
Did some cheese and ribs with it so far.  Pellets work the best.

Just a thought but if not to hard to build, now that one has been built, I bet you could sell some on here. Just saying!

How did you light the pellets?

How did you light the pellets?

I've done the pellet ignition two ways, with a starter and without.

I like breaking up a Kingsford self light briquette and dropping in a few pieces to get started. I light the briquette pieces from underneath (hinged door) with a small propane torch and once the pieces almost turn white, I toss in a handfull of pellets. Smolders away.

I've also just dropped in the pellets and ignited them from underneath.  Takes a little longer to stoke the pellets this way.

I did some ribs on Super Bowl Sunday and they turned out the best ever.

I like the idea that I can regulate the volume and amount of smoke I want inside the drum.  Plus, it's much more efficient than placing or layering chips in the charcoal basket and guessing you'll have enough smoke for the cook.

I used two handfulls of pellets for a 4 hour smoke.

I've got three generations of the smoke daddy. It looks like you may have solved one smoke daddy problem of the creosote sealing the top on. Once you get it going, and you've got the smoker at temp, you should be able to shut off the air pump. Nice job. ;D

Yup, there is a creosote build up in this as well, but becuase the top slides, it's easy to open.  The bottom is hinged and just swings open.

A few other features I like better on this comapared to the Smoke Daddy;

1.  There is jusy enough of a seal break on the top that you can also see if the generator is still smoking.
2.  To remove, simply hold the eyebolt, push in on the quick connector and remove the generator, the quick connect fitting seals the port.
3.  When you're done, you set it on the legs to cool down and clean.
4. The legs can also be adjusted for proper height to connect to low profile, Homer Bucket style cold smokers.
5. The bottom lid stays attached to the generator.
6. Pump side has an easy barb type slip connection, not a tube in a tube over a tube connection like the Smoke Daddy.

is there a screen in the bottom that keeps the pellets in when you light it from the bottom? I can see that the air comes in the bottom thru the small holes, but still wondering about an internal screen that keeps the ash from clogging the air holes?  How about a pic of the inside??
Thanks
