I actually started with UDS's and have built 3 so far. after using them and seeing the faults they have. I decided to do one a little different, with this one I am building it upside down. I put the lid on the bottom then cut the bottom out. the bottom which is now the top with a reciprocating saw. After grinding it smooth I then started grinding the metal lip so that my domed lid will fit. the reason I wanted to do it this way is so I dont have to dump the whole barrel when ash builds up I just lift the barrel off the lid which is now the bottom and it exposes the ash. The other advantage is Im able to lit the fire like I do my WSM. With the Barrel off I can lit the fire then put the barrel on and Viola. My camera was stolen so I will do so photos with my phone as I go to keep you posted.

I have one barrel built like that. One issue is rain/water getting caught in the bottom lid lip. Also the moisture will drip out of the bottom while cooking so if I use it somewhere Im worried about stains I put a towel or drip pan under it.
I did it for the same reasons you stated, to make the weber kettle lid fit. I thought about taking it apart to get the ash out but with the basket/ash pan I use, very little ash falls to the bottom of the barrel and what does I just shop vac out. I am hoping that over time the "seasoning" will seal the lid to the bottom.
Having the weber lid is great for larger pork butts, I also noticed I tend to get better bark with the kettle lid then I do with the flat lid.
