Has anyone ever used an old wood stove as the begining of a build? My buddy has a an old unit he wants to get rid of and this is something I've thought about for awhile since it is heavy wall and wouldn't bleed heat as much as a UDS. I'm thinking of using it for the firebox of course and sticking a drum horizontally above it via a damper and heat deflector plate.

Good find, Kitch. An old cast iron stove seems tailor-made to be the base of a smoker.

Thanks Kitch. Those are right along the line of what I was thinking. I'll have to look at the stove and see what I can do. Not sure if I like the vertical set up as access could be a little more difficult than a horizontal set up although the heat may be a little more even. I'll keep you posted.

MIKE, iv'e built a couple in the last 5 years. My favorite one i designed the firebox with our woodstove in mind-same size and shape,etc. We have been using this wood stove for the last 10 years so we pretty much have it down and thought it would be easy to adjust to the smoker/pit, which turned out to be the case!I went with a 24 x24 fire box attached to an old propane tank and we've been really lucky and happy with how it turned out! It burnes very clean(blue smoke) and only takes about 15 minutes to come up to temp! Looking back i could have gone with a slightly smaller firebox but a really like the extra space on top for a griddle,pots,pans, etc.Good luck and if you need any help feel free to e-mail me-PAT

Awright! I'm thinking I'm really onto something here now. It just makes sense as the heavier gauge the firebox, the easier it'll be to maintain temp. That and add the fact these old stoves were made to for regulating heat and we're set. I'm thinking of sticking a damper in between the cooker and the stove as my buddy is pretty green to Q so it may make it easier for him to learn.
