BUFORD-1, Build, Test And Smoke

Been smoking for about 3 years now with a BBQ Galore horizontal side box smoker. Does OK but only has enough room for about 8 racks of baby backs and that's not enough meat for the parties I throw.

Discovered the UDS at the Scottsdale BBQ and met many of you. A few of you were kind enough to fill me in on the details of the UDS and several other types of smokers as well.  You all are a great bunch of folks!

So, based upon some of your information and other on line sources I decide to build my first vertical smoker, BUFORD-1. Butt Ugly Friggin Old Recycled Drum.

I've done some pork butts and picnics on this thing and I'm amazed at how long it will smoke and how trouble free it is.

Here is a slideshow of the build, etc.

It's amazing what some beer, a fire wrench, and some displaced anger can accomplish. Awsome job indeed.

I'm glad I found this thread. Tha's a fine lookin cookin' machine, right there, mon!!
I love the firebox mod. And the temp gauge conduit is a great touch. And the thing I miss the most about my '68 Tempest may just be the Hurst shift knob!

For cooking, lower and slower. For spices, mo' hotter, mo' better. Habaneros rule!
