Title: AZ BBQ Outftters Spin on the UDS
Post by: AZBBQGRILLS on May 11, 2012, 08:07:48 pm
So this is my first attempt at making a Drum Smoker. I built this for Dan with Crazy Big BBQ. It will be auctioned or raffled off at the Scottsdale BBQ Event. I rolled the drum from 14 Ga PO Metal. Let me know what you all think.

Well it is actually much lighter than I thought. We removed the lid and grate and was able to lift it and place it in a 4x4 with out straining  :P

Well one upside it's it looks to be tip over proof. Probably take at least an F-3 tornado to knock it over. Nice wide base!

Even though it looks heavy and industrial it's quite lite weighing in at less than 100 pounds.  I'm going to tween it a bit and offer them up for sale.  One thing I found was the max height is  about 40 inches. It become cumbersome to reach in and get to the racks. From all you drum user what would you add to it. I am doing the following. Drum is 36 H by 24 W 14 Ga Metal
One rack at 23 inch diameter.  Heat deflector of diffuser 3/16 Steel plate no holes. 3.5 inch exhaust 3 inch air intake. Gasket sealed at the top only. Fire basket 15 inch diameter by 6 inches deep. All vents can be operated without bending over.

David,

The only other thing I would like to see is a second grate.  I'm wondering if one could be hung underneath the main grate.

We can do it. Dan mentioned spacing I could make a duplicate grate that could be underslung on the upper grate so as no to weld on that shinny new drum. Easy Stuff.

When I was showing it to my son yesterday I mentioned hanging an additional grate.  Having one actually made for it would be..................grate :D

I'm going to do a dry run next week to get the hang of operating it, maintaining temps, etc.  I will let you know how she does.

I am very interested in a "hang on" grate, so PM and let me know how much it will be.

WOW!  Fantastic.  Thanks!!!

I will do my first test run on Tuesday, will take notes and give you lots of feedback.  If she cooks half as good as she looks, it will be a winner.

She cooks great.  Holds steady temps, for a long time.  Here she is in her new home.  Dan managed to get North American Powder Coating to paint her -- Harley Davidson Black Wrinkle.

Mike that Harley Black came out looking awesome.  I can imagine that she probably has less draft or sealing issues when compared to a standard UDS.  Thanks for the pic, she looks like found a very loving home!

No draft or sealing issues.  Very responsive to intake and exhaust adjustments.  And when I shut down, the coals go right out.  If you are looking for something REALLY solid (not too portable, but more so than a ceramic cooker), contact Dave at www.azbbqgrills.com (http://www.azbbqgrills.com)

I recently painted the AZBBQGRILLS logo in copper.  I think it looks pretty cool:

Thanks Chuck, the copper color makes it really stand out.
