Burn out new barrel?

I have been doing some searching on this forum and cant find a definitive answer to my question.  I have called Sun West Container Co. based on recommendations from this forum.  The lady I spoke with told me that item number DRU7121 (55 GALLON NEW OPEN TOP DRUM W/ LOCKING RING & BOLT) is commonly sold to people to make a smoker.  I was told this drum has no liner.  With that in mind do I still need to do a large burn out on the drum?  Would a thorough washing with dish soap, and a break in/seasoning smoke around 300 degrees be sufficient?

I have read that some new drums come with a rust inhibitor sprayed on the inside of the drum.  To those who have purchased from this company, do these drums have that inside?

Thanks in advance!

Ian,

Having purchased those barrels from Sun West myself, they do not have a liner of any kind. Bare metal on the inside. Not even an oil coating. Your seasoning method is sufficient. I found a light coating of cooking spray helped the process prior to seasoning. Make it a long empty cook if possible. Another option you have is whether or not you want a bung hole (insert joke here). I have both. My bung hole lid exhaust helps with higher temp cooks, 300 degrees plus, while the non bung hole lid has drilled holes, better for lower temp cooks. Either one I can control at any temp.

If you need any other advice, don't hesitate to ask. There are several of us drum heads here who have tips to help you avoid the pitfalls.

Thanks for the info!  Ill be sure to post the build once it starts.

In regards to the paint on the drum, how has yours held up on cooks 300 and below?

I bought my barrel there too.  The paint has held up very well over 5 plus years.

Mine too. I had them powder coated after a couple years, but the paint held up surprisingly well.

Look forward to seeing your build in progress Ian.

Well that makes the build even easier!  I was afraid I was going to need to remove the outside paint, then repaint with high temp paint.

I wonder how well high temp paint would do if I paint a logo/design over the factory drum paint with a little prep first.  I wonder if the two will react once heat is introduced (cracking or bubbling).
