Burger crawl?  I'm in!
And if I am not mistaken, the original Mary Coyle's was just across the street from Phoenix Baptist Hospital on 19'th ave just north of Bethany Home.  At least that was where I first had a pippen size sundae back in 1968.

Actually, the very first Mary Coyle's opened 60 years ago at 36th Street and Indian School. They closed in the 60's to open two new locations- at 15th Avenue and Thomas, across from Phoenix College, as well as the one you mentioned north of Bethany Home Road on 19th Avenue. That one eventually closed and only the Thomas Road remained open.  That location closed about 20 years ago and they moved to the current location on 7th Avenue, north of Missouri.

Mary Coyle's was retro corny even in the 60's. My family went there to celebrate every graduation. My oldest soda fountain memories go back even farther to Grosso's Chocolates- an Italian chocolatier and ice cream fountain on Washington in downtown Phoenix. It dated back to pre-WWII. I also have fond memories of soda fountain cherry phosphates at Isaac School Drugs (my wife still cracks up at the name) on 35th Ave. & McDowell. I grew up in the area and went to junior high at Isaac. The school dates back to the 20's, had wood floors and was heated with radiators. A real piece of Phoenix history.

You guy's are killing me-MARY COYLES and the CHUCK BOX! I'm so far away! MIKE, when we 1st started with our catering rig, our pulled pork was our best seller! Then about 6 months later our bacon green chile cheeseburger took over and sold like crazy!! I learned to appriciate them when i was working at LENNY'S in SNOWFLAKE ( gone now) back in 1989. I still have to have them on a regular basis at home!

You wanna go way back on green chile burgers...when I was a kid we had a place in west Phoenix called Blake's Lotaburger. The last one here was in downtown Phoenix on Grant and about 5th Avenue. It closed about 15 years ago.

They still have them throughout New Mexico. The burgers are even thinner and wider than a Whataburger and top them with a heaping helping of diced green chiles.

Jimmy Jack's was on west VanBuren. Their logo had two kids on a seesaw. Their claim to infamy was getting busted for selling horseburgers. :-X Their sales dropped precipitously after that appeared in the paper.

Speaking of the paper, there was one of those sticky coupons on the front of today's AZ Republic. It's a buy one, get one free for green chile double cheeseburgers at Whataburger.:P The Gods must have been listening in to our discussion.

Jimmy Jacks isn't high on my list.  I work by 35th Ave and Lower Buckeye so it's in my lunch range.  I think it's around Van Buren and 20th Ave.One time is all it took for me to never go back.  It's a pretty scary place to eat at with their "clientele".

The Burger Shoppe on 27th and Van Buren has pretty good burgers but not much else.  The best burger I've had in a long time at a restaurant was at Zinburger.  That place is pretty solid.

Back in the 1970's we use to go to JIMMY JACKS for their breaded pork tenderloin sandwiches !( it's a midwest thing!) I grew up on those back in INDIANA ! We made those on friday night at the very first TAYLOR event and our bbq neighbors had never experienced the magic that is the DEEP FRIED PORK TENDERLOIN SANDWICH!!!!

I had a burger yesterday at Bueno Burger on Hayden Road. It is a Scottsdale outpost from the original in Glendale. I had it "Arizona Style" with green chiles, green chile beef and sour cream. A little sloppy, but pretty good.
