Stacey's Smokehouse BBQ

Rudedogg (Chris) and I just got back from lunch at Stacey's. I had the rib tips and fries with a side of fried pickles and okra. The rib tips were good - nice smoke ring and very tender but covered in sauce. Next time I will get the sauce on the side, which was good - a little sweet for my taste but he is catering to the masses. The fried pickles and okra were good as well - cornmeal dusted. I have had better. Chris had the pulled pork sandwich with onion rings. He said the pork was good - I'm sure he will chime in soon and give you his thoughts. I did talk to Stacey about AZ BBQ Club and he said "Is that the one with Mike?" I told him we were members and do BBQ Competitions and he asked if I we were there for a throwdown Bobby Flay style. I told him to check out the site and to come out to our next BBQ Comp. in Sun City - he said he would and try to come so we will see what happens. Overall I would give Stacey's a solid B grade.

BTW - he said he was using apple wood for everything he smokes. He also said he likes to use almond wood but didn't have any on hand. Has anyone used almond wood out there?

I had a bit of it for a while. Got it from our great sponsor, BBFW. I don't recall how it went. Apple eclipses all i've used so far...

For cooking, lower and slower. For spices, mo' hotter, mo' better. Habaneros rule!

Nice Review Smit...

In my opinion the the sauce was definitely a little too sweet and next time i will order it on the side. Nothing special about this place and the BBQ isn't too bad. I want to try a few other things next time I go. Call me crazy but I've yet to find a restaurant in the valley with sauce that I like... it's either too sweet, too thick or has too much vinegar (or a combo of all 3)

I've used almond wood. Nice medium smoke. Whole Foods sells it by the box as firewood in colder months. I believe it cost about $5 for an orange crate-sized box. In my Kamado, it lasted me the better part of a year since I'd only use one log per cookout.

Meh...unfortunately I have to echo the 'underwhelmed' sentiments for Stacy's.  Maybe it is if you show up right as they open you're guaranteed yesterday's leftovers.  Which isn't necessarily bad mind you, but the patrons shouldn't be able to tell.
I had the half chicken with a side of mac-n-cheese.  The chicken had upwards of a cup (yes, I do indeed mean eight fluid ounces..) of sauce that it was swimming in to try and mask the dry bird.  There wasn't much smoke flavor either.  The mac-n-cheese came swimming as well with a 1/2" of oil gathered on the top.
Staff was kinda b!tchy too, didn't really get the warm fuzzy from this place at all....
