Shane's Rib Shack *****

As many of you know I grew up in Kansas City the home of the best bbq in the world.  For years I have been saying that Fiorella's Jack Stack Barbecue in Kansas City is the best in the world.  Recently the Zaget Poll agreed and declared them the best.

However!

Saying all that...

Shane's Rib Shack is a franchise from a Georgia so it is a southern style sause.  Carrie and I have eaten there three times in the last two weeks.  Typically we get the The "Big Dad" Pork Sandwich and the Shack Sampler.

They have three sauces; Original, Spicey w/ a touch of sweet, Hot.  My favorite is the Spicey with a touch of sweet.

The chopped pork is fabulous, the chicken tenders with teriaki sauce is amazing and the ribs are great.  The first two times the ribs were just  a touch over done in my opinion but they were perfect the third time.

The sides we get are fries, they have the best fries in town, baked beans, wonderful, just too small a serving and cole slaw, which is just how I like it.

Wed night is rib night, they have the rib plates at discounted prices and beer buckets (5 bottles for $10).

Ok, now the reason I mentioned Fiorella's Jack Stack Barbecue in Kansas City.

We ate at Shanes on Thursday night last week, then flew to Kansas City and ate at Fiorella's Jack Stack Barbecue on Friday night.  When we finished eating Carrie and I looked at each other and said the same thing....

Shane's is better than Fiorella's Jack Stack Barbecue!  The only thing that is better is the quality of meat that you get at Fiorella's but that can be said about almost any restaruant in KC because the beef is fresh and you are in the town most of it stopped breathing at so it is hard to beat KC beef.

I love this, the best BBQ in the country is 5 minutes from my house and I live in Phoenix, Arizona!

Shane's Rib Shack is located in the new shopping center at I-17 and Happy Valley Road between Starbucks and Panda Express, just a couple doors down from L&L Hawaiian BBQ.

5 Cows outa 5!

Go, eat, enjoy!

I went there last night. I had a full rack of ribbs, about a pound of pulled pork, frys, beans, cole slaw and I was needed to be wheeled out in a wheel chair.  ;D

I love the sauce they have there. The spicy sweet sauce is by far the BEST I have come accross. The not sauce was hot but full of mMMM goodness. I normaly can not stand hot sauces but this was the exception.

Oh yea. BTW. My wife "the ultimate hill billy from TN, and KY" said they have the best sweet tea she has ever had. And that is saying something. She is known for making the best tea.

You got that Thom, once you eat homemade Q,you never want anything else !! I have eaten 2 times at Shanes and was not impressed either time. The food is ,well,uh,ok,I mean it's franchised, not very authentic.I have eaten alot in St.Louis,KC and spent 2 weeks in Memphis about 3 years ago and I ate BBQ dailey and all those places(even the not so good ones)I think were better than Shanes. The problem with Shanes(I have heard this from others as well )is they are way to inconsistent with their food, one day good, the next not so good. The ribs both times seemed overdone, dry, and not real flavorful, the flavor was all in the sauce. The proof will be if the are around in 2-3 years, thats about the most it takes for places to go out of bussiness if the food is either not good and or inconsistant.I will stick to homemade,in Phoenix, there just isn't any good Q here it seems !

Czar -
I'm with you.  I was underwhelmed.  It didn't help that, when I looked into the kitchen to see their smoker, they had a couple of small ovens that use wood chips.  Electric heat and wood chips equals "Lazy-Q" at best.  This means a minimal smoke ring (if any), and minimal smoke flavor.

As for my meal, I had the Big Dad Pork Sandwich, which was HUGE.  Problem is, it was on Texas toast that fell apart immediately.  There was simply no way to eat this as a sandwich.  In addition, there was not a single piece of pork with any pink (smoke ring) color to it, just as I expected.

Mac & cheese, very disappointing.  Institutional tasting at best.  Sauce wasn't bad, however.  I won't be back.

You guys are hard on the BBQ joints. One of the hardest foods to serve in a restaurant has to be BBQ and one of the most expensive has to be BBQed ribs. Give the guys a break. We all know that you make better BBQ than you can go out and buy, if you couldnt you wouldnt be competing. When you are out eating BBQ, just enjoy the fact that you get to eat some BBQ and you didnt have to spend 12 hours on it yourself.  ;D
