Title: Sad Day!
Post by: Flagstaff BBQ & Catering on October 17, 2009, 10:45:46 am
Went to the valley yesterday to pickup some pellets from BBQ Island (1000 lbs) whew. Decided to go see my friend Rodney McClain over at Appetites BBQ in Avondale. We stopped by the store and there was a sign in the window that he has closed the restaurant but will still be dong catering on the west side. We were shocked to say the least! This is a great loss to the BBQ community. Needless to sat the trip back up the hill was filled with sadness at this loss. I haven't been able to call him yet to find out what's going on. I'll do that today.
Chris and I are both feeling badly.
A sad day indeed.   :'(

That does suck.  I hope he rebounds and is successful in whatever he does.

Yes.. it's very sad...... he's bummed...... he is strictly doing catering....... his bbq is great and goes to show just how tough the economy is....... that's why I don't believe the BS the white house is saying about the recovery.... I still have parents and teachers at my school losing their houses and husbands losing jobs..... 95% of businesses in the US are small......... and they are closing and I don't see new ones opening up.....

Arizona carried over with work longer than the rest of the country. So now, it will be one of the last areas to recover. Construction wise, we'll be lucky if we see new starts by second quarter next year. I'm sure you've heard it on TV, work (labor) is so bad here that the illegals are leaving for other parts of the country. And by the time it's over, the wage scale here we be crap(people will be so happy to work that they'll work for less). Sorry, didn't mean to make it political. It's very sad what is happening to the small businessmen.

No problem with the politics.... but saturn just laid off 30,000.... and those people don't work in AZ....... being at a school.. I can tell you we are registering students from all over the country and in our district... because of loss of jobs and housing.... and if you were leave to AZ.. you can't get a teaching job anywhere.....and schools are a great indicator of the economy....... because we see the communities everyday and hear their stories..... and if Luke doesn't get the new fighter....... hold onto your seats......... as I step down from soap box.. one more thing......Wall steet numbers are still to high...... the white house is talking a good game....haven't sold me..........whew........ I feel better...... thanks for the session.......

You're welcome. I watch commercial and industrial construction across the country everyday. There is virtually nothing for Arizona till the second quarter of next year at best. As I'm sure you read a couple of weeks ago, the big solar energy field that was suppose to go in the desert west of Phoenix was canceled. Looks like it's going to California. Most of the new starts will be in the government/energy fields, and will be in blue states. Saturn shut down because GM couldn't sell it and the government wouldn't bail them out anymore. Intel has allotted a large amount of money for projects upcoming, the bulk of which is going to New Mexico and Oregon. Arizona will recover, but it's going to take a while.

It is sad,Phoenix and surrounding areas have one of the highest resteraunt failures in the country.I saw an article last fall and they said 7 out of 10 new resteraunts in the Phoenix area will be gone within 9-12 months after opening .I have seen doing service calls resteraunts that have closed up after only 3 months,it's really bad around here.I think it will get worse ,alot worse, before it gets better and yes I think Phoenix will take about 1-2 years longer to rebound thatn alot of other states.I had thoughs of opening up a BBQ place at one time, but not now,not for awhile.Catering is the way to go I think for now.I am looking into that and getting things together to go that route first, that good advice was from Brent Walton and several others who did that same thing.

The moonlight bunny ranch filed bankruptcy. When those types of Nevada establishments are going under...what does that say about the economy?

No, Not the Bunny Ranch.  What's wrong with this economy when even the Prostitutes can't stay in business..  :'(
